Lyrics[]

In my own time
I'm trying to reach out I know I'll get there soon
There's a hole in the earth here
And we're walking round the edges
You were flaunting all your open wounds
I can't express them better than you
You have very childlish qualities
Friend make sense of me, friend make sense of me
I have many destructive qualities
Friend make sense of me, friend make sense of me
It's like an old rhyme
Your father's a liar while my father's lying down
In a hole in the earth there
And I'm scared I'll forget him
I'm still haunted by those open wounds
I won't express them truly to you
You have very childlish qualities
Friend make sense of me, friend make sense of me
I have many destructive qualities
Friend make sense of me, friend make sense of me
Friend make sense of me, friend make sense of me
I have so much hurt inside me
Friend make sense of me, friend make sense of me
Friend, friend, friend, friend
In my own time
In my own time
In my own time

Interpretation[]

The song is about Chloe’s struggle of dealing with the loss of her father William who is “lying down in a hole in the earth” and her desire to open up about her feelings to someone, a friend she can trust in. Like “open wounds”, the loss of her father is still affecting her deeply, and while she could try to move on, she is scared of forgetting him, and coping with self-destructivism instead.

Chloe doesn't know how to open up about her feelings and confide in someone. It’s really hard for Chloe to even express those feelings at all; instead she is just “walking around the edges”, never really showing what she truly feels. But with Rachel, someone who has issues related to her father as well and who she feels is so much better at opening up about her problems and feelings, she has found someone she wants to try and confide in, but also someone who can help her understand herself better and “make sense of [herself].” It gives her hope that “she’ll get there soon.”
