The blue jay is a bird that appears around the Madsen household.

A blue jay also appears in Life is Strange: Before the Storm.

Episode One - "Chrysalis"[]

The bird tries to fly into Joyce and David's bedroom through a window and hits a closed window pane where it dies. Max Caulfield can rewind to save it by opening the window where the bird will fly inside and perch on top of a wardrobe.

Max will later encounter a blue jay along the path leading to the lighthouse where Max may take an optional photo.

Episode Three - "Chaos Theory"[]

The bird is seen on a perch in the bathroom. Max can look at the bird.

Episode Four - "Dark Room"[]

When Max returns to the main timeline, she will be tasked with retrieving some files from the garage. At this point, the bird can be found atop the shower. If Max scares the bird, it will fly into the hallway and onto a bookshelf. Scaring it a second time will cause it to fly toward the window. If the window is open, the bird will fly out. If it's closed, the bird will fly into the window and die. The bird will also die if Max saves it in Episode 1 and does not interact with it in Episode 4.

While in the garage, Max can discover a nest with blue jay eggs by the main garage door. The nest is protected by a plank, which Max can move in order to take an Optional Photo. If Max leaves the nest unprotected then leaves Chloe's house, she will later receive a text from Joyce, which will include a photo of the destroyed nest along with a crying-face emoticon.

If the blue jay is dead, Max can find it in Chloe's room after their conversation with Frank Bowers.

Before the Storm[]

In Before the Storm, a similar looking bird is seen in the parking lot. It flies away when Chloe looks at it and she comments: "Okay, yeah, bye. Elitist Blackwell bird...".

Symbolism[]

It was speculated that blue jay is Rachel Amber's spirit animal. However, in the Director's Commentary, it was said that "the Doe is clearly linked to Rachel".
