This article is a script for Chapter 4: Flicker of Life is Strange: True Colors.
Party Time[]
The scene opens with Alex sitting on her bed, talking to Deputy Pike on the phone.
Alex: Pike. It's all on this USB drive. All the evidence you need to nail Typhon for Gabe's death and plenty more.
Pike: Alright. Bring it with you. I'll meet you in an hour.
Alex: Thanks. Talk soon.
Alex ends the call and puts away her phone. As she stands, we hear Steph's voice on the radio.
Steph: Citizens of Haven Springs, we are live at the Spring Festival! One final reminder to head over to the Lethe Flower Cart and grab a rose before they're gone.
Alex steps over to a window which looks out at the park, where the Festival is taking place. Steph continues.
Steph: At Haven's inaugural Spring Festival, eligible women of "good stock and birthing age" would offer up roses in order to attract a mate. What can I say, history is weird. Thankfully, we've lost the mating stuff but kept the roses. And if you do have a special someone in mind, a rose is a great way to say you care and an even better way to say "Hey look, a rose!"
Alex steps away from the window as a song begins to play on the radio.
Alex: (thinking) Sounds fun. Is giving away a rose something I'd do? Maybe. I can decide downstairs. For now, I'll grab the USB stick.
Alex walks over to the desk and takes the USB stick.
Alex: (thinking) Okay. Time to head downstairs.
Optional interactions
Pressed Rose
Before leaving, Alex trigger a memory with a pressed rose by the kitchen table.
Charlotte: Traditionally, you give roses to your crush at the Spring Festival, so…
Gabe: I've never had a girl give me flowers before.
Charlotte: I'm sorry. I didn't know you cared so much about traditional gender roles. I'll get back to my butter churning and doilies.
Gabe: Shut up.
Charlotte: You first.
Sculpture
Alex can look at Charlotte's sculpture.
(Alex took Charlotte's anger)
Charlotte: When did I become such a fucking monster?
Alex: (thinking) Woah. What was that? I can still feel some of Charlotte's anger from before…
(Alex didn't take Charlotte's anger)
Alex: (thinking) I wish I could have helped Char. But taking her pain away didn't feel right.
Alex leaves the apartment.
The Spring Festival[]
Alex walks through the park and finds Steph doing a sound check of the microphone on stage as Ryan works the mixer board.
Steph: Test, test. Check, check. Check.
Alex approaches them. Steph notices her outfit.
Steph: Holy shit, you own a skirt?
Feedback from the microphone occurs. Ryan and Steph react to the feedback.
Alex: Hey guys.
The two of them approach Alex.
Ryan: Happy first Spring Fest.
Alex: Thanks.
(Alex took Charlotte's anger)
Alex: I need to apologize to you guys. What happened in the apartment… Something really messed me up.
Hearing Gabe
Alex: Hearing Gabe's voice… I wasn't ready for that. I thought I was, but…
Helping Charlotte
Alex: These past few weeks, I thought I had a handle on my emotions. But after what happened with Charlotte…
Alex: It's the same old story. I lose control, and I hurt the people I care about. I'm sorry.
Steph: Yeah, fuck that. If anyone needs to apologize, it's me. Ever since we've met, you've been there for me. And then when you're the one struggling, I bail. Not cool. I'm really sorry.
I guess we're both sorry.
Alex: If we're both sorry, does that just cancel everything out?
Steph: I think so. We're back to normal.
I owe you a trophy.
Alex: It's totally fine. But I swill owe you a new trophy.
Steph: Let's play for it.
Steph and Alex shake hands.
Ryan: Not to spoil the moment, but: Typhon blew up their own mine. Why?
Alex: I don't know yet. But we've got all the evidence we need to nail them for Gabe's death.
(Alex didn't take Charlotte's anger)
Dialogue skips straight to…
Alex: I got a hold of Pike. He'll be here soon. Once he sees what's on that stick, it's over for Typhon.
Ryan: Hence the celebration. I think we've all earned the right to enjoy ourselves a little tonight.
Steph: The band's coming on soon. You'd better be front and center.
Need help setting up?
Alex: Oh, rad. Do you need help setting up for the show?
Ryan: Nah, it's all good, we're almost there.
Who's playing?
Alex: Nice. Who's playing?
Ryan: Local band. You'll love them.
Steph: I have to run back to the trailer. Go be a normal person for a while.
Alex: Can't make any promises.
Steph returns to the radio station's trailer. Alex turns to Ryan.
Alex: Text me when it's ready.
Ryan salutes Alex as he returns to the mixing board.
Alex: (thinking) If I wanted to give away a rose, Steph and Ryan would definitely be on my list… Anyway… time to enjoy the festival.
The free roam section of this scene starts now. It ends once Alex receives a text from Ryan (about 8 to 10 minutes from when the player regains control of Alex), and she returns to speak with him. All actions and conversations which appear in this section are optional.
The Park[]
Memories
Drum Kit
Alex can trigger a memory (Joy) with Steph's drum kit. It starts with a rock band finishing up a song. Gabe can be heard cheering and clapping after the song ends.
Izzie: Hey thanks, uh… man.
Steph: This show rules.
Izzie: It's uh… it's something. Anyway… I'm Izzie. That's Steph. We're Drugstore Makeup from Seattle. We've got um… merch. (likely to Steph) Dude, count me in, I'm dying.
Microphone
Alex can trigger a memory (Joy) at a microphone backstage. It starts with a crowd cheering.
Jed: Hey, uh? Hey, hello. Everybody? Can I have your attention?
Ann: Jed, what are you doing?
Jed: I just wanted to take this opportunity to say, right here in front of God and everyone, that Annette Theresa Foster is… just the most beautiful woman in the world. They say the Spring Festival is about telling folks how you feel. And Ann, I feel like I'd just about die if I couldn't make you my wife.
Ann: You had to go and make a scene, didn't you?
Ryan
(Before giving him a rose)
Alex: Hey, how's it coming?
Ryan: Good. I'd say the chances of starting a fire are low to medium low.
(After giving him a rose)
Alex: Please don't get electrocuted.
Ryan: I'll try my best.
Steph
Alex: Hey, Steph.
Steph gives her the devil horns sign, then points at her headphones.
Jed
Jed is in a conversation with three other people.
Overhear
Jed: It happened last year, yup. I remember it clear as as day. Probably around 10 or 11 PM, and he was already drunk as a skunk. Boy. And I'm not advocating for that kind of drinking, mind you. Despite my occupation. Spring Fest is different from the Lantern, we all agree. But anyway, he comes racing out of the diner. Bowled over a couple tables along the way. I see him hauling ass towards the dock, and I get on after him, because I know what he's aiming for. And, sure as hell, this son of a bitch jumps right off the end of the dock and into the water. Smack! Belly flop. And the poor bastard is so drunk, he forgot he doesn't know how to swim. So I jump in there after him. Took a minute, but I dragged his ass back to dry land and we called him an ambulance, just to be sure. He was fine, though. So then I gotta spend the rest of the night soakin' wet, which doesn't bother me none, but everybody keeps offering me a buncha goddamn towels. Next morning, he shows up at my door with a box of chocolates. Chocolates! God knows why he thought that was the right token of gratitude. But, in all fairness, I ate the whole damn box. Best I ever had!
Read
Jed: (thinking, joy) It's been a hell of a month. But this makes it all worthwhile.
Alex: (thinking) Jed loves this town so much. It's inspiring.
Music Lover and Student
Overhear
Student: I love that the radio station broadcasts live from the park.
Music Lover: Right? It almost makes it feel like a tiny Coachella.
Student: Super tiny.
Music Lover: So, listened to anything good lately?
(Default)
Student: Yeah, but nothing new. I've had the new Paint Thinner Coffee single on repeat for, like, a month.
Music Lover: Oh god, it's so good. How do they do it?
Student: Honestly? Blood magic. It's gotta be.
(Alex played Alabaster Daydreams on the jukebox)
Student: Funny you should ask! You remember that song, Alabaster Daydreams?
Music Lover: Hmm… Early 2000s?
Student: Maybe? Anyway, the weirdest thing happened today. I was in the Lantern studying and I was thinking about the lyrics and wishing it would come on, and then it totally did!
Music Lover: Huh. What are the chances?
Student: Right?? Kind of makes you think, doesn't it? About the vibrations we emit into the ether. You know, psychic waves and whatnot.
Music Lover: Could be. Karmic energy's no joke.
Read
Student: (thinking, joy) This. Is. Awesome. Favorite time of the year, by far.
Alex: (thinking) That kind of enthusiasm is infectious. Especially for me.
Eleanor and Glasses Guy
Overhear
Eleanor: So then, where's the after party this year?
Glasses Guy: After… party?
Eleanor: Come on, young man like yourself. You must know what the haps is.
Glasses Guy: Honestly, I'm getting pretty bushed. Thinking of calling it a night soon.
Eleanor: My goodness, what is this town coming to? Used to be that the Spring Festival wasn't complete till everyone was either asleep in the park or in someone else's bed.
Glasses Guy: Must have been pretty wild back in your day.
Eleanor: My day? I'm talking about last year.
Read
Eleanor: (thinking, sadness) God. I just hope Riley is doing alright.
Alex: (thinking) Oh, no. What happened to Riley?
Boyfriends
Alex can find Jesse Whitaker (identified in the subtitles as Writer Boyfriend) and his boyfriend talking in the park.
Overhear
Jesse: Okay, so there's this young farm maid in the elvish countryside. Sets out to find her missing sister, who was abducted years ago by a guild of warlocks.
Supportive Boyfriend: Go on…
Jesse: Along the way, she picks up mercenaries. The kind she never expected to be friends with. Elf criminal. Undead priest.
Supportive Boyfriend: Ooooh!
Jesse: They find the sister. The sister is now the High Warlock of the guild. She's threatening the entire kingdom with her magical shit.
Supportive Boyfriend: And they gotta take her out… right?
Jesse: I don't know! But what a dilemma. Fucking Shakespeare meets Tolkien. This is what I always should have been writing.
Supportive Boyfriend: Jesse, this is amazing. It sounds like your muse is finally back.
Jesse: Didn't need a muse. Just needed to get out of my own head long enough to remember who I am.
Read
Jesse: (thinking, joy) Thank you, Steph. Thanks for helping me find the fun again.
Alex: (thinking) Sounds like Ethan wasn't the only one inspired by the LARP today.
Anxious Couple
Alex can read an anxious couple who are sitting on a park bench, not speaking to each other.
Anxious Girl
Anxious Girl: (thinking, fear) Crap, was I supposed to give him a hug? Does he think that I think it's not a date?
(Alex reads her first)
Alex: (thinking) If this is a date, it's a really silent one.
Anxious Guy
Anxious Guy: (thinking, fear) Should I not have worn cologne? IS that too try-hard? Maybe I didn't wear enough.
(Alex reads him first)
Alex: (thinking) Or maybe it's the total lack of saying anything?
(After reading the second person)
Alex: (thinking) Aw, they'll get the hang of this one day. Or not.
New Miner
If Alex has not danced with Duckie, she can find a new miner talking on his phone.
Overhear
New Miner: No, Mom, it's not an emergency. Trust me, I'm fine … It's just… Typhon is really… I dunno… … I told you we all had to sign NDAs, right? I was thinking about that a bit more and… … Do you think you could talk to Uncle Rick? See if that sounds above board to him? … No, Mom, don't do that. Just call him tomorrow. I'm sure it's fine. … Hm? Oh, yeah, it's this big festival they do here. … Yeah, it's nice. There was that outdoor theater thing on Main Street earlier, and now-- … One beer. I know, Mom, I won't. … It's one beer, Mom.
Read
New Miner: (thinking, fear) Typhon is not normal. I made a mistake coming here.
Alex: (thinking) Get out while you can, dude.
Duckie
If Alex has danced with Duckie, the new miner will be talking with him by the bonfire. She can still read the New Miner, but she can also have a conversation with Duckie.
Alex: Hey Duckie, how are you feeling?
Duckie: Splendid, thanks to you! Go have some fun, you've earned it.
Ice Cream Couple
Alex can overhear a conversation between Sonny and Angela Anderson and read Angela.
(They didn't notice Ethan during the LARP)
Overhear
Sonny: Well, we gave it a shot.
Angela: Oh stop, Mr Doom and Gloom over here. We're not out of the ice cream game yet.
Sonny: No, hey. Hey, I take… responsibility. If we gotta shut down the shop, I want you to know that I--
Angela: Seriously, no more of this, okay? Whatever happens won't happen until after tonight. For now? Let's just… have another drink. And take a break from freaking out about the shop.
Sonny: You're… really smart.
Angela: Duh. That's why you married me.
Read
Angela: (thinking, sadness) We couldn't hack it in the ice cream after all. But at least we gave it a shot.
Alex: (thinking) Sounds like they've reached the end of their rocky road. I'm the worst.
(They noticed Ethan)
Overhear
Sonny: What are you so happy about? Been a while since I've seen you with a smile like that.
Angela: It's that cake. That dragon-shaped ice cream cake. I feel like something… clicked as soon as we thought of it.
Sonny: As soon as you thought of it.
Angela: I can't stop thinking about it. Could we do a castle-shaped cake box?
Sonny: Yeah, yeah, that's good. What if we did little swords instead of serving knives?
Angela: Oh my god, we could do a LARP! Like, ourselves! As a promotion!
Sonny: Ooh, what if we called our loyalty program "Experience Points"?
Angela: Okay, stick with me for a minute: full… fantasy… re-brand. Forget the avalance thing. Dragon's Horde Ice Cream.
Sonny: I fuckin' love you.
Angela: Right fuckin' back atcha.
Read
Angela: (thinking, joy) We're ice cream geniuses. We run this shit.
Alex: (thinking) Keep flexing, ice cream lady.
Jelly Bean Counting Contest[]
Alex encounters Hector Gonzales (identified in the subtitles as Jelly Bean Counter), counting jelly beans, while a lady stands behind the table where a jar full of jelly beans is placed.
Hector: 232. 233. 234. No, the red one was 234. Wait. Damn it. 1. 2. 3…
Alex can read Hector.
Hector: (thinking, sad) This game is so demoralizing. Why do I do this to myself?
Alex: (thinking) Hm. Maybe I can help him somehow?
Alex can read the Jelly Bean Lady.
Jelly Bean Lady: (thinking, joy) Another year, another "prize" gift card for yours truly to keep. I'm such a little devil!
Alex: (thinking) Really? Come on, Jelly Bean Lady. That's not right.
Alex can talk with the Jelly Bean Lady.
Alex: Hey there.
Jelly Bean Lady: Guess the exact number of jelly beans and win a prize! Only one guess per person.
Alex: The exact number? Is that how this game is supposed to work?
Jelly Bean Lady: You can go right after this… determined young man.
Alex can talk with Hector.
Alex: Hi.
Hector: Oh, hey! Nice to see ya.
Alex: You're taking this jelly bean thing very seriously.
Hector: Yeah, 'cause the prize is a $100 gift card.
(Alex did not reunite Hector with his lost dog)
Hector: My mom just got a promotion, so… I thought I could take her out for a nice dinner.
(Alex helped to reunite Hector with his lost dog)
Hector: Chrissy's been all anxious ever since she got lost, so… I thought I could get her a bunch of treats.
Hector: Which is really embarrassing, saying it out loud…
Alex: Not at all, that's sweet. Maybe I can help?
Hector: Oh, for real? Are you good at this? How many jelly beans do you think there are?
300.
Alex: 300-ish?
Hector: Huh. Yeah, could be…
Alex: (thinking) Feels like something just changed in that lady by the jar. Maybe I should read her?
Alex reads her.
Jelly Bean Lady: (thinking, joy) "300"? What a nitwit. Not even close!
Alex: (thinking) I was that far off? Maybe I should say something before he guesses wrong… Also, the hell's your problem, lady?
800.
Alex: It's always more than you think it is. I'd say, like, 800 or so?
Hector: Huh. Yeah, could be…
Alex: (thinking) Feels like something just changed in that lady by the jar. Maybe I should read her?
Alex reads her.
Jelly Bean Lady: (thinking, fear) 800's actually not bad… Hopefully they don't go lower.
Alex: (thinking) Oh, I was close? Maybe I should say something…
(No response)
Alex: You know what, I have no idea. I'm so sorry.
Hector: No problem, I'll just keep counting.
Alex will be unable to help any further.
Alex talks to Hector again.
Alex: Hey, I've got another guess.
Hector: Yeah?
200.
Alex: Maybe 200 is a little closer?
Hector: Alex, I counted more than that by hand.
Alex: You did?
Hector: Why don't I take it from here. Thanks anyway.
Alex: Sure.
Alex reads Jelly Bean Lady after Hector gives up on Alex.
Jelly Bean Lady: (thinking, joy) I win. Again!
Alex: (thinking) Guess I'm just not cut out for jelly bean counting.
700.
Alex: I think it's closer to 700.
Hector: Yeah… 700 feels right… But we have to get it exactly.
Alex: (thinking) Just felt that lady's heart skip a beat. I should read her again…
Alex reads her.
Jelly Bean Lady: (thinking, fear) Dear me, they're really close to 731. Who is this girl?
Alex: (thinking) Hell yes, your secret's mine.
Alex gives the answer to Hector.
Alex: The answer is 731. Don't ask me how.
Hector: Seven hundred thirty-one jelly beans!
Jelly Bean Lady: That's… that's correct.
Hector: Yes! (to Alex) Thanks so much for your help. You rule.
Alex: No sweat.
Alex reads Hector after winning.
Hector: (thinking, joy) Best Spring Fest ever.
Alex: (thinking) And so, peace returned to the Jelly Bean Kingdom.
Alex talks with Hector after winning.
Hector: Thanks again!
Alex: Yeah, that was fun!
Alex reads the Jelly Bean Lady after winning.
Jelly Bean Lady: (thinking, anger) I can't believe it. How did she know?
Alex: (thinking) Just a lifetime of emotional trauma.
Alex talks with the Jelly Bean Lady after winning.
Jelly Bean Lady: Got pretty lucky there, didn'tcha.
Alex: Super lucky.
(No response)
Alex: Actually, I'm not sure.
Hector: Okay. Thanks, Alex.
Alex will be unable to help any further.
Conversation with Eleanor[]
Alex: Hi Eleanor.
Eleanor: Good evening, dear.
Lots of work, huh?
Alex: The decorations really turned out beautifully. It must have been a huge amount of work.
Eleanor: It's worth it.
We drinking later?
Alex: So, we doing shots tonight, or what?
Eleanor: Of course. Body shots. Who's going first? (off Alex's reaction) Just kidding. Or am I?
They share a laugh.
Where's Riley? (after reading Eleanor)
Alex: Hey, so, where's Riley? I haven't seen her around.
(Riley didn't find out about Eleanor's condition)
Eleanor: Well, she's got a lot going on right now. I think she'd rather keep to herself tonight.
Alex: Okay…
Alex: (thinking) That was odd. I wonder if there's something she's not telling me…
(Riley learned about Eleanor's condition)
Eleanor: She's not really in the festive spirit. She was supposed to leave town tonight, if it wasn't for, you know…
Alex: Oh. I'm sorry.
Eleanor: You were so helpful to me that day at the shop. If you see Riley, maybe you could help her too?
Alex: Sure. I'll try my best.
I better go.
Alex: I better get going.
After selecting "Where's Riley?" in the conversation above, Alex can read Eleanor again.
(Riley didn't find out about Eleanor's condition)
Eleanor: (thinking, sad) Poor Riley. Waiting for her bus all alone. But thank god she never found out about my condition.
Alex: (thinking) Riley went to the bus stop alone? I wonder why…
(Riley learned about Eleanor's condition)
The blue aura will appear, but Alex won't be able to read Eleanor.
Conversation with Mac (determinant)[]
If Alex calmed Mac down in Chapter 2, Alex can find him standing by one of the flower carts.
Alex: I heard the call. And I wanted to thank you. I know you tried to do the right thing.
Mac: So. What now?
Alex: I'm taking Typhon down. The whole hornet's nest.
Mac: I'm not betting against you. But in the meantime, they're the only ones cutting checks in town.
(Mac and Riley still together)
Mac: And if I want to keep Riley, I can't be broke.
(Mac and Riley broke up)
Mac: And I've still got plenty of bills to pay.
You can do better.
Alex: Come on, Mac. Even you're too good to work for them.
Okay, but be careful.
Alex: I guess I can't blame you. Money's money. Just keep your guard up, okay?
Mac: It's always flattering to see how much you care about me.
(Mac and Riley still together)
Mac: But you know I'm spoken for, right?
(Mac and Riley broke up)
Mac: No wonder you tried to break up me and Riley.
Alex: Ugh. There's the Mac I know.
Alex takes a few steps away.
Alex: Take it easy, dude.
Mac: Yeah. You too.
The Rose[]
If Alex took a rose from the flower cart, she can give it to either Steph or Ryan.
Steph
Alex holds up the rose for Steph to see. Steph is surprised, and takes off her headphones.
Alex: This is for you.
Steph takes the rose.
Steph: Are you serious?
Alex: Of course I am.
Steph: Dude. Thank you so much. This totally makes my night.
Alex: I'm glad.
Steph leans forward.
Steph: Hey, could we meet up after the show tonight? I actually have some pretty big news to share, she said mysteriously.
Alex: (chuckles) Of course.
Steph: Speaking of, Ryan should be done any minute. Meet me there?
Alex: Sure.
After this interaction, Alex can read Steph.
Steph: (thinking, fear) Holy fuck. She gave me a rose. Time to step it up, Gingrich.
Alex: (thinking) Hope I'm ready for… whatever I've started.
Ryan
Alex: Hey, Ryan? I have something for you.
She holds up the rose; he takes it.
Ryan: Alex… I… wasn't mentally prepared for that at all. Wow. Thank you.
Alex: You're welcome.
Ryan: Actually, I've got something for you, too. Think we could meet up after the show?
Alex: Of course.
(Necessary time has not yet passed)
Ryan: Well, enjoy the festival. I'll let you know when I'm done here.
Alex: Cool. See you in a few.
Alex can read Ryan.
Ryan: (thinking, fear) Okay, play it cool. It's just a rose. Play it cool.
Alex: (thinking) Hope I'm ready for… whatever I've started.
(Ryan texted that he's ready or Necessary time has passed)
See Conversation with Ryan (after receiving his text), below.
Main Street[]
Brown Bear Diner
As Alex walks past the diner, its new owner Jack Stevens, who is standing in front of its entrance, calls out to her.
Jack: Grand opening tomorrow! Free soup and salad for Spring Festival attendees! Just… come introduce yourself!
Read
Jack: (thinking, fear) Gotta pull my shit together for this grand opening… These people won't be so gracious forever…
Alex: (thinking) We might. Free food goes a long way in Haven.
Speak
Alex: I'll take a coupon!
Jack: No coupons, my dear. Just tell me your name and I'll remember it.
Alex: Alright. Alex Chen.
Jack: Alex Chen… didn't we speak already tonight?
Alex: Nope.
Jack: Stupid! So stupid! "Print some coupons," they said. "It's a small town, I'll remember," I said. Oh hubris!
Alex: You know, you could try posting on MyBlock. Whoever comments gets the deal.
Jack: Oh. That's a good idea.
Alex: Best of luck!
Angry Man
Alex walks past a man (identified in the subtitles as Locked Out) angry that his car has a boot on it.
Overhear
Angry Man: Are you serious right now? A boot? A fucking boot on my car? Okay. So I can't park where I normally park because we have to celebrate a bunch of fucking flowers? Hey boot: fuck you! You think you're making the world a better place? Think you're doing a "service" for the "citizens"? You're just a goddamn tool for The Man! You're a cog in the machine, you metal fuck!
Read
Angry Man: (thinking, anger) One, two, three, I control me. One, two-- Fuck! I don't control shit!
Alex: (thinking) Sorry, man. We've all been there.
Day Drinkers
Alex encounters a couple, Josh Hopkins and Julia Crowe (identified in the subtitles as Guy Friend and Gal Friend) talking to each other.
Overhear
Josh: The LARP was a lot of fun.
Julia: Yeah, it was.
Josh: Do you think there's food left at the festival?
Julia: Are you hungry?
Josh: I though you might be.
Julia: I… could be.
Josh: But are you?
Julia: Not really. But that's nice of you.
Josh: Right. Cool…
Read
Josh
Josh: (thinking, sad) God, I still like her so much. What do I do?
(Alex reads him first)
Alex: (thinking) Sorry, man. Forbidden love is a bitch.
Julia
Julia: (thinking, anger) Damn it, I'm head-over-heels for this dork. What do I do?
(Alex reads her first)
Alex: (thinking) That's a rough place to be.
(After reading the second person)
Alex: (thinking) Wait, they're both into each other? Come on, people.
Speak
After reading both of them, Alex can talk to them.
Alex: Hey, um…
Cute couple.
Alex: I just wanted to say - you two make a really cute couple.
Julia: (startled) Oh. Thanks, Alex. That's really sweet.
Josh: That idea doesn't bother you?
Julia: Us being a couple?
Josh: Yeah.
Julia: I… kind of like it.
Josh: Holy shit. Um. Okay. So does this mean… did you want to, um…
Julia: Go out some time? Yes.
Josh: But - just the two of us…?
Julia: Yes. An actual date, devoid of pottery or third wheels.
Josh: Okay. Okay, great.
Alex can read them after helping them.
Just make out already.
Alex: It's the Spring Fest. You're both obviously into each other. Just make out already.
Julia: (startled) What?
Alex: You heard me.
Julia: Is it that obvious?
Josh: Is what obvious?
Julia: Fuck.
Josh: Julia, I don't want to screw this up. What's obvious? Are we talking about the same thing?
Julia: Look, if we weren't in the middle of the street, I would totally jump you right now.
Josh: I--
Julia: Do you wanna come back to my place tonight, maybe?
Josh: Oh my god. Absolutely yes.
Alex can read them after helping them.
(No response)
Julia: You good?
Alex: Yeah.
Josh: Have a good night, Alex!
Alex will be unable to say anything else to them, and their emotions remain unchanged.
Chatting Couple
Alex can find a chatting couple (identified in the subtitles as Chatting Man and Chatting Woman) across the street from Lethe Flowers.
Overhear
Man: I have a surprise for you.
Woman: Good surprise or bad surprise?
Man: I started a farm in Moondrop Ranch.
Woman: Get. Out.
Man: I'm romancing Melody.
Woman: The nurse?! She's adorable!
Man: I'll be real with you right now: game is sick.
Woman: I love you.
Read
Alex can read the woman.
Woman: (thinking, joy) Didn't expect that him playing my favorite game would be a turn on, but… here we are.
The Black Lantern[]
Memories[]
Polaroid
Alex can trigger a memory (fear) with a photo on the wall near the restrooms.
Jed: Come on, son. Get it over with.
Ryan: (coughing) I don't wanna get sick.
Jed: You're gonna feel a whole lot better after you do.
Ryan: (breathing heavily) I'm gonna die, Dad.
Jed: Not tonight you're not, birthday boy. Although I suspect you're gonna wish you had tomorrow morning.
Ryan is heard throwing up.
Jed: Attaboy.
Duckie[]
Conversation before reading Duckie
Alex: Hey Duckie.
Duckie: Evening, Alex.
Alex: Everything okay?
Duckie: I'm fine, thank you.
You don't seem fine.
Alex: You're an awful liar. What's wrong?
Duckie: Nothing. I'm right as rain.
Bar's closed.
Alex: You know the bar's closed, right?
Duckie: Oh? So it is.
Alex can read Duckie.
Duckie: (thinking, sad) It's not the same without you, Tabitha. Never was. Never will be.
Alex: (thinking) "Tabitha"… Sounds like Duckie's got a story to tell.
Conversation after reading Duckie[]
Alex: Hey Duckie… who's Tabitha?
A blue aura appears around Duckie.
Alex: Do you want to talk about her?
As Duckie speaks, a song can be heard.
Duckie: You know, Alex, on this particular matter, I don't have much to say.
Alex: Okay.
Alex: (thinking) There's gotta be more I can do for Duckie.
Alex can focus her power on Duckie. When she does, When she does, the blue aura fills the room and the entire bar, but focuses on a carved bear, a table for two, and the jukebox. Alex must trigger the memories from all of these before continuing to help Duckie.
Alex: (thinking) Okay. Tell me what I need to know to help him…
Carved Bear
Duckie: You know, I carved that myself. Oh hi, I'm Reginald McCallister III. My friends call me Duckie.
Tabitha: (giggles) Tabitha Baker. Call me Tabs.
Table for Two
Duckie: Wait, wait! Don't drink it. Look at the bottom!
Tabitha: What? What are you… Oh Duckie, it's beautiful.
Duckie: Tabitha Baker, will you marry me?
Jukebox
Tabitha: Happy anniversary, love. Here's to another thirty years.
Duckie: And another thirty festivals, if we can make it.
Tabitha: Duckie, you're gonna outlast this whole damn town.
The song, "Cobwebs and Rainbows", begins to echo in Alex's mind.
Alex: (thinking) I know that song…
After triggering the memories from all three objects
Alex: (thinking) Poor Duckie… maybe there's something I can do.
Alex can help Duckie.
Alex: It's a tough night for you, isn't it? The Spring Fest?
Duckie: That's right.
Tabitha
Alex: You met Tabitha here, didn't you? In the Lantern.
Duckie: Yes I did. Being here on that night… was the luckiest I've ever been.
Wooden bear?
Alex: Did you actually carve that wooden bear?
Duckie: Branagh? Sure did. That was a long time ago.
Spring
Alex: The Spring Festival must have been important to you two.
Duckie: Indeed. We were married at the festival. We both loved it so much.
Dance
Alex: Give me one sec.
Alex goes over to the jukebox and selects "Cobwebs and Rainbows." As the song begins playing, Duckie walks out toward the main room. Alex and Duckie approach each other.
Duckie: How did you…
Alex: They're playing your song. Let's dance.
Alex and Duckie dance to the song. After dancing…
Duckie: You know what reminds me most of her right now? It's not the song, or the festival. It's that you took the time to care about a sad old man. For no other reason than to make the world a little less troublesome. That was Tabs.
Duckie holds Alex's hands in his for a moment.
Duckie: Thank you, Alex. I think I'm a little more inclined to join the others outside.
Alex: You're very welcome. Enjoy the festival.
Duckie leaves the bar.
The Bridge of Flowers[]
Alex: (thinking) Wait… is someone standing out past the Bridge of Flowers? Pretty late for a bus ride…
Memories[]
CIT Sticker
Alex can trigger a memory (sadness) with a "Proud Parent of a Colorado Institute of Technology Student" sticker on a back window of Lethe Flowers.
(Riley didn't find out about Eleanor's condition)
Riley: I've never missed a Spring Festival before. Like ever.
Eleanor: Oh, honey. You'll catch the first few hours. And there will be other Spring Festivals!
Riley: Actually, Nana? I might just wait at the bus stop. Avoid the parade of goodbyes.
Eleanor: I'll cover for you.
(Riley learned about Eleanor's condition)
Riley: Nana, no, hey, don't put that sticker up.
Eleanor: And why not? Aren't I allowed to be proud of-
Riley: Nana, I'm not going. Remember? I'm staying here. With you.
Eleanor: Right… Yes, of course, I… Riley, I'm sorry.
Riley: Nothing to be sorry about. We'll scrape it off tomorrow.
Riley[]
Riley can be found waiting at the bus stop. Before the conversation, Alex can read her.
(Riley didn't find out about Eleanor's condition)
Riley: (thinking, fear) Here I am. Just waiting at the bus stop. About to change my entire life.
Alex: (thinking) I've been there.
(Riley learned about Eleanor's condition)
Riley: (thinking, sad) I'll just have to wait. That's all.
Alex: (thinking) Maybe Riley could use some company right now…
Conversation with Riley[]
(Riley didn't find out about Eleanor's condition)
Alex: Hey, Riley.
Riley: Oh, hi Alex. What are you doing out here?
Alex: Just out for a walk. You?
Riley: Can't tell that woman anything. My bus comes tonight and I just couldn't bear saying goodbye to everyone.
Alex: I get that.
Riley: I'm really gonna miss this town. I'll miss my Nana most of all, of course.
(Mac still in Haven and together with Riley)
Riley: At least Mac is here to help around the shop. We're gonna try the whole long distance thing. But… don't hold your breath, though.
Alex: I won't.
Riley: I hope Nana's okay. She's in good health, but sometimes I wonder if I should really be leaving her here alone.
Alex: (thinking) Eleanor is keeping her condition a secret… but I feel like Riley would want to know. What should I do?
TELL RILEY ABOUT ELEANOR
Alex: Riley, I think there's something you should know. It's kind of a long story, but, I found out that Eleanor has Alzheimer's. I'm sorry. I know it's a lot to take in.
Riley: Oh god. I had my suspicions, but… I need to go home and talk to Nana about this. Thank you so much, Alex. I'm sure it wasn't easy to tell me this.
Alex: Sure. Good luck.
Riley leaves.
KEEP ELEANOR'S CONFIDENCE
Alex: Eleanor is so proud of you. All she wants is for you to follow your dreams.
Riley: You're right. Of course.
Alex: Good luck with everything. We're rooting for you.
Alex steps away.
Riley: Thanks, Alex. Have a great time at the festival.
(Riley learned about Eleanor's condition)
Alex: Hey Riley.
Riley: Oh, hey. What are you doing here?
Looking for you.
Alex: Just wanted to say hi. I couldn't find you at the party.
Riley: Yeah, partying's not really in the cards.
Escaping the party.
Alex: Just taking a walk. I needed a breather from all that socializing.
Riley: I get that.
Riley: I was supposed to leave on the bus tonight.
(selected "Where's Riley?" in the conversation with Eleanor)
Alex: I know.
Riley: So many hopes and dreams, all poured into one fucking bus ride. But it's okay. Nana needs me now. She was there for me before, and now it's my turn.
(Mac still in Haven and together with Riley)
Riley: And I don't have to do it solo. I have Mac helping me. That's something.
(Mac still in Haven; Mac and Riley broke up)
Riley: And I don't have to do it solo. Mac is still helping around the shop, even with us broken up.
Alex: Eleanor is so lucky to have you.
Riley: Thanks Alex.
Alex: Hang in there, okay?
Alex steps away.
Riley: I will. You're awesome for coming out here.
Conversation with Ryan (after receiving his text)[]
After about ten minutes in free roam, Alex will get a text from Ryan if she's not already talking with him at that time.
(Default)
Alex: Hey.
Ryan: Hey. Just in time.
Alex: So who's playing?
(Alex just gave a rose to Ryan)
Ryan: Alright. Well, this is pretty much set. You ready?
Alex: Yeah. Who's playing?
Steph approaches them, carrying a pair of drumsticks.
Steph: Yours truly.
Alex: Seriously? That's awesome! Well, wait, who else?
Ryan and Steph look at each other, then they both look at Alex.
Alex: Steph…
The excitement falls from Alex's face.
Alex: …who else is playing?
Cut to a shot of Alex on stage, holding her guitar.
Alex: I hate you both.
We see Ryan and Steph on the side of the stage.
Ryan: We didn't want you to wuss out.
I wouldn't wuss out.
Alex: Who said anything about wussing out?
Ryan: Nobody. But only because we didn't give you the opportunity.
Absolutely would wuss.
Alex: Wussing out is highly underrated. We haven't even practiced yet!
Steph: Who cares? Everyone's wasted, anyway. Just play whatever! I'll follow your lead.
Steph walks across the stage, over to the drum set.
Steph: This is gonna be awesome. Trust me.
Alex steps up to the microphone.
Alex: Um… we've never played together before, and--
She looks back at Steph, who nods approvingly.
Alex: Anyway… sorry if this sucks…
She looks back at Steph for a moment.
Alex: Fuck it.
Alex plays "Blister in the Sun" (Violent Femmes) as the crowd cheers and dances along. After the performance, Alex is seen putting her guitar back in its case. She looks up and sees Charlotte, standing by herself some distance from the stage. Charlotte walks away.
Conversation with Charlotte[]
Alex finds Charlotte standing at the end of the dock. Alex stands next to her.
(Alex took Charlotte's anger)
Alex: Hey Charlotte.
Charlotte: How deep, do you think? The lake, I mean.
Alex: I don't know.
Charlotte: I felt… horrible this afternoon. I didn't know if I could survive that feeling. But now… It's like when your leg falls asleep. And even though it's still attached, it's become something other than "you." My whole life, I've always felt so deeply. But… maybe this is better?
I'm sorry.
Alex: Charlotte, I'm so sorry.
Charlotte: Sorry for what?
Alex: I didn't mean for any of this to happen.
Charlotte: Mm. Me neither.
This might be good.
Alex: There's no shame in needing to feel numb for however long it lasts. If it gets you through another day.
Charlotte: I don't feel ashamed. But… I take your point, thank you. At least I can survive numbness.
Charlotte starts to leave, but stops.
Charlotte: Good to see you, Alex. Have fun at the festival.
(Alex didn't take Charlotte's anger)
Charlotte: I was… horrible to you earlier.
Alex: You really weren't.
Charlotte: Really? Then I fucked up, because I was trying pretty hard to be horrible to you. I was so excited about you coming to Haven. In my mind, the way I built it up… We were gonna be best friends. I wish…
There's still time.
Alex: There's still time.
Charlotte: Maybe. I guess we'll see.
Me too.
Alex: I know. Me too.
Alex and Charlotte spend a moment together at the dock.
Alex: Hey. You okay?
Charlotte: No. But… well, you know. I'm gonna go home.
Charlotte leaves. Alex gets a text from either Ryan or Steph, asking to meet her on the rooftop.
(Steph)
Alex: (thinking) Sounds like Steph wants to meet me on the rooftop.
(Ryan)
Alex: (thinking) Sounds like Ryan wants to meet me on the rooftop.
We return to free roam, which ends when Alex goes upstairs to the rooftop. Any of the conversations above not yet activated are still available, and new ones are available below.
The Park (After the Performance)[]
Conversation with Duckie (determinant)[]
Alex: You enjoying the party, Duckie?
Duckie: Absolutely! With a performance like that, how could I not?
Alex: Thanks.
Duckie: You know, I'm no stranger to the mandolin if you're ever looking for backup!
Alex: I'll keep that in mind.
Conversation with Jed[]
Jed: That was one hell of a performance!
Alex: Thanks.
Conversation with Music Lover[]
Alex: Hi there.
Music Lover: Oh my god, hi. Can I have your autograph?
Alex: Ha, okay.
Music Lover: I'm serious!
Alex: Oh! Us. Sure, find me later, alright?
Music Lover: Awesome! Thank you so much.
Alex can read her after this conversation.
Music Lover: (thinking, joy) Holy shit. Holy shit. She actually spoke to me.
Alex: (thinking) Okay. I'm flattered.
Rooftop Rendezvous[]
(Alex gave a rose to someone)
Alex will meet with the recipient of the rose.
(Alex didn't give a rose)
Alex will meet with the person she chose to distract Diane.
Alex meets with Steph
Alex arrives at the rooftop. Steph is already there waiting.
Alex: Uh… you said you have some news?
Steph: I'm leaving. I'm actually leaving Haven Springs. Can you believe it? Back on the road again, fucking finally!
Alex: Wait, seriously?
Steph: I'm gonna play music again, Alex. Anywhere I want. God, I forgot how fucking good it feels!
So happy for you.
Alex: Holy shit, Steph, that's so cool! I'm really happy for you. You better keep in touch.
Steph: You think it's that easy to get rid of me? Come on, Chen.
This sucks.
Alex: I don't know what to say. I want to be supportive, but…
Steph steps closer to Alex.
Steph: Hey, hey, c'mon. No time to be sad. We've got work to do.
Steph: I need a new destination. You're my good luck charm.
Alex: You have shit taste in good luck charms.
Steph: Shut up.
Steph places three postcards on the table.
Steph: Pick one.
Berlin.
Alex points to the postcard which shows a picture of the Brandenburg Gate and has the caption "BERLIN."
Steph: Berlin! Fuck yeah! Bowie recorded Heroes in Berlin, and that record slaps. Where am I gonna live there?
A big loft.
Alex: Some big loft with concrete floors and exposed brick walls.
Steph: I'll brood on the fire escape, writing lyrics in my leather-bound journal and drinking absinthe straight from the bottle.
Alex: Some day, they turn the place into a museum. "Steph Gingrich recorded Blahblahblah here, and it slaps."
Some kind of squat.
Alex: Day one, you fall in with the crustiest punks in Berlin. They take you to their squatted warehouse.
Steph: I start booking bands from all over the world to play our space. Soon, we're internationally famous as a DIY venue.
Alex: Which attracts the attention of the authorities, they surround the place to evict you.
Steph: So we use our earnings to buy a stack of shipping containers by the river and become even more badass.
Alex: That sounds like a pretty spectacular plan.
Steph: Great. Then come with me.
Alex: To Berlin?
Salem.
Alex points to a postcard reading "Witch You Were Here! Salem, Massachusetts."
Steph: Salem! Halloween capital of the world, or so they say. Who do I hang out with?
Witches.
Alex: You join a coven.
Steph: A lesbian coven.
Alex: Is there any other kind? You hang out in graveyards and perform rituals to speak to the dead.
Steph: None of which ever work, but that's okay, cuz I get a load of old tombstone rubbings to decorate my apartment with.
Massholes.
Alex: What if you infiltrate a bunch of Massachusetts bros? Hang out in a dank bar til 2, shouting "Go Sox!" at the TV.
Steph: You know what? Yeah. That sounds wicked rad. Get real tough and edgy, really integrate into the whole scene.
Alex: You start challenging dudes twice your size to drinking contests. You never lose, obviously.
Alex: That sounds like a pretty spectacular plan.
Steph: Great. Then come with me.
Alex: To Salem?
Ocean.
Alex points to the postcard reading "Greeting from… The Middle of the OCEAN."
Steph: Wow, nice pick. Alright, tell me about my life in the middle of the sea.
Cruise ship.
Alex: Congratulations on your new gig playing drums in a cruise ship band.
Steph: I can make that work. I'll mix up the dad rock and showtunes with one Bikini Kill cover per set, nudge some yuppies toward better taste.
Alex: You could even throw in some originals. Before you know it you've got the world's first cruisecore band.
Sea lab.
Alex: You could take a job at an underwater research lab. Maybe as like…
Steph: Chief underwater acoustics engineer.
Alex: You might need to walk me through that one.
Steph: Dude, think about it! The kinds of sounds you could capture down there would be, like, totally unique! I could pioneer a whole new genre! Deepcore. Wetstep.
Alex: That sounds like a pretty spectacular plan.
Steph: Great. Then come with me.
Alex: To the ocean?
Steph: Sure! Why not? Doesn't have to be our first stop but… one day. I still have friends in Seattle who book shows. Maybe we start there. Or… I dunno, Kansas City? Vegas? Wherever we want!
They look at each other.
Steph: Look, I don't want to pressure you. But… I've seen you give so much of yourself to make sure other people get what they need. And I guess I wonder if you've thought about what you need. I mean, obviously, I like you a lot Alex. You mean the fuckin' world to me.
Hug.
Alex hugs Steph. After a moment, they break the hug and hold hands.
Kiss.
Alex steps closer to Steph. As she does so, she sees a purple aura immediately form around her.
Steph: (thinking, fear) Kiss me! Oh, kiss me, kiss me, kiss me…
High Steph Romance Score
Alex and Steph share a passionate kiss. The aura around Steph changes to gold. Eventually, the aura explodes and radiates through the surrounding area. It continues expanding until it goes beyond the distant mountains. It also makes the stars in the sky appear a bit brighter. After a moment, they hold hands.
Low Steph Romance Score
Steph: You don't have to decide anything now, okay? Just think about it.
Alex: I will. Thank you.
Steph: I'm gonna head back down… Find me later?
Steph pauses at the door and they look at each other one more time before Steph leaves.
Alex meets with Ryan
Alex arrives at the rooftop. Ryan is working on a planter near the center of the roof. He hears Alex approaching, and stands to face her.
Ryan: Ta-da.
Alex looks in surprise.
Ryan: It's a tree.
I can see that.
Alex: Thank you, wilderness expert. I was more wondering… why?
You shouldn't have.
Alex: For me? I've never been given a tree before.
Ryan: My mom used to get insomnia when I was a kid. She'd drive over here to the Lantern, three in the morning, to work in the garden. Sometimes she'd take me with her. It's always been a special place for me. Hope it can be for you too.
Alex: I should have been taking better care of it.
Ryan: Come on. You've had other stuff to worry about. Like totally killing that set! You're such a rock star!
Alex: Thanks. For everything. I had fun.
Ryan: So did the audience. You know they're gonna make you do it again next year, right?
Alex starts looking worried.
Ryan: You… You good?
Alex: Yeah. Fine. Guess I've just been too wrapped up to think about what the future looks like.
Ryan: Okay. So let's think about it. Alex's Future in Haven Springs.
Alex: The Major Motion Picture.
Ryan: The Ride.
Alex: On Ice.
They laugh.
Ryan: Close your eyes.
Alex hesitates for a moment, but eventually does.
Ryan: It's morning. Chilly. You can see your breath. You're walking down Main Street. On the way to work. Where?
The Black Lantern.
Alex: The Lantern.
Ryan: Okay. Kind of a… safe choice, but I get it.
The record store.
Alex: Definitely the record shop.
Ryan: Oh, I'm sure Steph will appreciate that… before you ruthlessly push her out and take her job, that is.
Ryan: So after work… Sun's still up for another couple hours. It's warm now, you're carrying your jacket under your arm. What's the plan?
Play guitar.
Alex: Sit right here on the roof and play my guitar.
Ryan: Smart. Stay in practice. Only a few more months until the next Spring Fest. Anyway, someone's at the door…
Hike.
Alex: Maybe I'm all outdoorsy now. A real Colorado girl. Up in the mountains with one of those little stabby sticks.
Ryan: Trekking pole. Not as good for stabbing as you'd think. Hey, would you look at that, who's that coming down the trail?
Alex: Who?
Ryan: Only the coolest person in Haven Springs. He walks up to you, in an extremely cool way, his plaid jacket swaying in the breeze--
Alex opens her eyes, laughing.
Alex: Dork.
Ryan: Yeah.
They look at each other.
Ryan: I'm not trying to plan out your whole life, but… if you decide you wanted to put down roots, Haven Springs will always make space for you.
Alex: Was that a gardening pun?
Ryan: No. Maybe.
Alex laughs.
Ryan: I… I really… care about you, Alex. A lot. You're the most amazing person I've ever met.
Hug.
Alex hugs Ryan. He hugs her back. After a moment, they break the hug and hold hands.
Alex: I care about you, too.
Kiss.
Alex steps closer to Ryan, as she does, she sees a purple aura around him.
Ryan: (thinking, fear) Come on, dummy, kiss her. Kiss her.
Ryan: I really want to kiss you right now.
Alex: I know.
High Ryan Romance Score
Alex and Ryan share a passionate kiss. The aura around Ryan changes to gold. Eventually, the aura explodes and radiates through the surrounding area. It continues expanding until it goes beyond the distant mountains. It also causes flowers on the tree Ryan planted to bloom. After a moment, they hold hands.
Low Ryan Romance Score
Ryan: Wanna rejoin the festivities? I'll get you a funnel cake.
Alex: Maybe you could save me one?
Ryan: Yeah, of course. I'll see you down there.
Ryan walks to the door and pauses there. They look at each other one more time before Ryan leaves.
Alex walks over to the ledge. She takes out Diane's USB flash drive and looks at it in her hand.
Alex: (thinking) Hey Gabe? Can I tell you something? I think I solved it. Why you died. Who's responsible. Isn't that crazy? I'm out of threads to pull. Which is terrifying. Because on the other side of all this, after Typhon, after you, there's just… normal life. I was counting on you to show me how to do that. But I think I can figure it out. I just wish you were here to see it.
(Kissed Steph)
Alex: (thinking) Oh, um. Also. I kissed Steph? So. That happened.
(Kissed Ryan)
Alex: (thinking) Oh, um. Also. I kissed Ryan? So. That happened.
Alex looks at the flash drive again and pauses before the scene on the roof ends. A moment later, we see Alex stepping out of the Black Lantern. She pauses there for a moment. While doing so, Pike approaches her.
Pike: Alex.
She turns to look at him.
Pike: Do you have the USB drive?
Alex: I do. It's all here. Gabe's call, their secret plan, the cover up…
Pike: You need to come with me to the station. Alex. Don't make this hard.
Interrogation[]
Alex is sitting in an interrogation room. After a moment, Pike walks in, carrying a folder, then closes the door behind him. He looks at Alex, then sighs.
Pike: Probably isn't how you pictured your first spring festival, huh?
Alex: Not exactly.
Pike: Coffee?
Coffee would be great.
Alex: Coffee would be great, thanks.
Pike: I don't know why I offered. We're actually out.
No thanks.
Alex: I'm alright. Thanks though.
Pike: Good, cause we're actually out.
How about a beer?
Alex: How about a beer?
Pike just smiles and shakes his head.
Alex: Worth a shot.
Alex: Pike, why am I here?
Pike sits at the table across from Alex.
Pike: The long and short of it is… Diane is charging you with stealing her USB drive.
Uh… what?
Alex: What the hell are you talking about?
That's bullshit.
Alex: That's bullshit. I haven't done anything wrong. They're the criminals here.
Pike takes the USB drive from his pocket and places it on the table.
Pike: Did you steal this USB drive or not?
Alex: At least tell me you looked at it.
Pike: I can't. Sorry.
You need to.
Alex: You're conducting an investigation into Typhon, right? Everything you've been looking for is on that drive.
Pike: Despite my best efforts, the case is closed.
Why not?
Alex: What do you mean? Why not?
Pike: Well, one, I would need a warrant. And two, the case is closed.
Pike: The order came down today. I did what I could, but, you know, the evidence just wasn't there. Sorry, Alex.
I have evidence.
Alex: I have the evidence. Right here.
Pike: It doesn't matter.
Order from who?
Alex: The order came down today… from who?
Pike: High up. Boss's boss's boss. It's not my job to know.
Alex: Look… what happened to my brother wasn't an accident. It was criminal. The files on that drive prove it.
Pike: That could be true. Let's say it is. The issue is, you stole Typhon's property. I can't work with that.
I get the point.
Alex: Okay, I get the point. I'm sorry I stole the drive, but--
Pike: Apologizing isn't enough.
Shouldn't matter.
Alex: I just handed you a smoking gun, it shouldn't matter how I got it.
Pike: Maybe not, but it does.
Pike: Alex, you're not thinking about this clearly.
Alex: Seems pretty clear to me.
Pike: Diane wants to charge you with computer fraud. That's a federal crime, Alex. Five-to-ten, easy.
No way.
Alex: You're telling me I might go to prison for this? For… five to ten years?
Fuck Diane.
Alex: You know what? Fuck Diane. This isn't justice. This is a joke.
Pike: It's not that bad! Hey, I talked to her, and despite how angry she is at everything you did, she's willing to let it go. If you agree to drop everything, Typhon won't press any charges.
Pike slides an affidavit in front of Alex.
Why the deal?
Alex: Why would she do that?
Pike: She just wants this whole thing to go away. This is how to make that happen.
Doesn't this mean she's guilty?
Alex: She's only offering that deal because she knows I have her. She's guilty, Pike.
Pike: Even if you're right, your only evidence is inadmissible. I think you should do it.
Alex: Fuck that, I'm not signing anything.
Alex pushes the paper back in Pike's direction.
Pike: Alex--
Alex: No! Typhon buried something in the mountains. Something so massive, they ignored Gabe's call and set off the blast just to cover it up. Don't you want to know what it is?
Pike: What do you mean, cover it up?
Alex: Another blast, unannounced. Set off at the exact same time at the old mining site. And all of it happened just a few weeks before inspections were set to begin. Come on, Pike. It's all right here.
He holds the USB drive in his hand for a moment, then sets it down again.
Pike: Like I said, it doesn't matter. Alex, please, just sign the form and we can both go back to the party.
Alex: No.
Pike: Alex, this isn't an offer that you can choose--
Alex: I said no!
Pike stands up. Alex sees a purple aura around Pike.
Pike: "No" is not an option!
Alex senses his fear.
Alex: What are you so scared of?
After a moment, Pike flips open the folder.
Pike: See for yourself.
Alex: (thinking) Shit… What could be in that envelope?
Optional interactions
Pike
Before looking at the documents in the folder, Alex can sense Pike's emotions.
Pike: (thinking, fear) Alex, please. I don't want you to get hurt.
Alex: (thinking) Then help me, damn it…
After looking at the documents, which are evaluations suggesting that not only Alex, but Steph and Ryan are serious threats to Typhon…
Alex: Is this a threat?
Pike: What did you expect, huh? That Typhon, a global organization with billions in revenue, an army of lawyers, and who knows how many politicians in their pockets, would just throw up their hands and say "you got us"?
I don't know.
Alex: I don't know… I was just focused on getting the truth.
Pike: The truth is that you have no idea what Typhon's capable of.
I thought I could get justice.
Alex: I thought I could get justice for Gabe.
Pike: Yeah, well, Typhon has their own idea of justice.
Alex: Shit…
Pike sits back down.
Pike: Believe me, I want nothing more than to make these fuckers pay. I've learned the hard way that it's not possible. They're too big, too connected, too ruthless.
He slides the affidavit toward Alex again.
Pike: You can hate me if you want. Call me a coward. But I don't want to lose you like we lost Gabe.
Alex: (thinking) Pike is terrified of Typhon. I bet if I took his fear away… But it's not just about me. Steph and Ryan are in danger too. Fuck. I want to hurt Typhon so bad. But can I really put their lives at risk, along with mine?
SIGN TYPHON'S AFFIDAVIT
Alex: All I have to do is sign?
Pike takes out a pen and places it on the table.
Pike: Yeah. X marks the spot.
Alex: (thinking) Can't turn back now. Time to sign my soul away.
Alex takes the pen and looks at Pike, who nods approvingly. Alex signs the affidavit. The purple aura around Pike fades away.
Pike: Thank you, Alex. You did the right thing.
He puts the affidavit in the folder along with the other papers, takes the folder, and stands up. He pauses, looking at Alex for a moment before leaving.
RISK TAKING PIKE'S FEAR
Alex places her hand on the table and more of Pike's fear is heard. The purple aura flows into Alex.
Pike: (thinking, fear) You want to risk your life over this?… Gabe, Mac, Alex. Who's next? Fuck, fuck, fuck… Just keep your head down, dummy… You're just a shitheel, Typhon's major league… Typhon doesn't lose… Typhon disappears people… Let them get killed, not you…
The purple aura is no longer surrounding Pike and enters Alex.
Alex: I know you're afraid. I am too. I know you think that Typhon is too big, too… invincible. But they're not. I will bring them down. I just need your help.
She pushes the USB drive in Pike's direction.
Have courage.
Alex: Just… have a little courage.
For Gabe.
Alex: If not for me, then for Gabe.
Alex: Please.
Pike picks up the USB drive.
Pike: Fuck. I'll… think about it.
Alex: Thank you.
Pike: Get the hell out of here.
Alex: Really?
Pike gestures with his eyes toward the door. Alex gets up and walks toward it.
Pike: Alex.
Alex turns and faces Pike.
Pike: Be careful.
Alex leaves as Pike looks at the USB drive.
Busted[]
Alex returns to her apartment. She finds a note on the floor near the door: "Alex- Come see me when you get the chance. -Jed." She puts the note on the table near the couch.
(Alex signed the affidavit)
Alex: (thinking) I can't believe this. I had them. How did it go so wrong?
(Alex took Pike's fear)
Alex steps back from the table.
Alex: (thinking) Those pictures. How long have they been watching us? And what will they do if--
Alex starts breathing heavily and falls to the floor. She puts one hand on the table and eventually calms down. She stands up.
Alex: (thinking) I have no idea what to do next. Maybe talking to Jed will help me feel better. First, I need to get out of this dress.
Alex changes clothes.
Alex: (thinking) Might as well go talk to Jed now.
Alex leaves the apartment.
A Proposition[]
Alex goes downstairs and finds Jed behind the bar.
Alex: Hey, Jed.
Jed: There she is. Have a seat.
Alex takes a seat at the bar.
Jed: Something tells me you've had a more exciting Spring Festival than you planned for.
Alex: You saw Pike arrest me.
Alex puts her head in her hands as Jed takes two shot glasses and puts them on the bar.
Jed: And let you go, apparently.
He goes to the bottles behind the bar and takes one.
Jed: Then there's that business with Ryan and Steph earlier today. I wasn't sure why it took all three of you to work out Diane's lunch order.
By this point, he has poured whiskey into the shot glasses.
Jed: I know you're used to looking out for yourself. Gabe was like that. But Haven's a community. We help each other. I want to help you. But first, you have to let me know what's going on.
Alex: (thinking) Fuck it. What have I got to lose?
Take a shot.
Alex drinks from one of the glasses. Player must now choose between "Typhon killed Gabe" and "Typhon threatened Ryan."
Typhon killed Gabe.
Alex: Typhon killed Gabe. I have proof.
Jed: What proof?
Alex: I stole it from Diane. E-mails and documents, proving there was a second explosion the night Gabe died. To cover something up, Jed. Some secret they buried. I don't know what it is. I don't even know what to do next. But I'm not giving up.
Typhon threatened Ryan.
Alex: I've been chasing proof that Typhon was responsible for Gabe's death, and… I found out they buried something. A secret. Now they're threatening me. And Steph. And Ryan.
Jed: Threatened? How?
Alex: Pike showed me photos. Typhon's been watching us.
(Alex signed the affidavit.)
Alex: I signed something. Just to get them off of Steph and Ryan. I promised I wouldn't press charges against Typhon, but… I'm not giving up, Jed.
(Alex took Pike's fear)
Alex: I'm not giving up, Jed.
Alex: Not ever.
Jed: I know what they're hiding.
What is it?
Alex: Please, Jed. What's the truth -- what are they afraid of?
You knew?
Alex: Wait… you're telling me you knew that Typhon's crooked? This whole time?
Jed: Typhon's the devil that runs this town. I've been carrying their secrets for far too long. I know what they buried in the mountains.
Alex: Tell me.
Jed: I'll do one better. I'll show you.
Into the Dark[]
The view of a mine shaft wall opens the scene. The camera moves upward and eventually reaches the surface, revealing Jed and Alex walking toward it. Alex is holding a flashlight.
Jed: There. Up ahead.
Alex: Where are we?
Jed: Middle of nowhere. (He points ahead) About two clicks that way is the mining site where you searched for Ethan. (He points behind and toward his right) Five clicks that way is town.
Alex: What is this thing?
Jed: Ventilation shaft. They're scattered everywhere. Over the years, mines grow into mines, creating a labyrinth under Haven.
Alex shines her light at the shaft in front of her.
Jed: What you're searching for is down below.
Alex kneels down and shines her light down the shaft. As she gazes into the deep, she suddenly senses an emotion from Jed.
Alex: Jed? Why are you sad?
Alex hears the sound of a gun clicking. Alex stands up and looks at Jed, who is holding a gun in his hand.
Jed: I'm sorry, kid.
Put the gun down.
Alex: Okay. Just put the gun down.
What's happening?
Alex: Jed… What are you doing?
Jed: I tried to talk you out of it. Scare you off. I was sure those pictures of Ryan and Steph would do the trick. But you were relentless. Won't leave damn well enough alone.
Alex: You don't have to do this.
Alex takes a step forward. Jed points the gun at her.
Jed: I do. Twelve years ago, I made a mistake. The kind of thing that you… you can't undo. But Typhon made me a deal. A way to save my town, give my boy a normal life. I never wanted Gabe to get hurt.
Alex angrily glares at Jed.
Alex: Go to hell.
Jed fires a bullet. Alex manages to dodge the bullet, but in doing so, she loses her balance and falls into the open shaft behind her, breaking several boards in the shaft as she falls. A slow-motion image of Alex falling down the shaft in the moonlight ends the scene.
