Chloe's Room[]
Three plastic dolls are tied together on the floor of Chloe's room, a firework in the middle of them. Chloe giggles, and she and Max, both wearing safety goggles, bend down near the dolls, Chloe with a lighter in her hand.
Chloe: Ready?
Max: I guess. But isn't your mom gonna freak?
Chloe: She's probably cooking with the radio on. She won't hear a thing.
Chloe tries to get the lighter started.
Max: I bet she'll notice a hole in the floor.
Chloe stops working the lighter and turns to Max, placing a hand on her shoulder.
Chloe: Trust in science, Max. Even when science means blowing shit up.
Chloe starts the lighter and lights the fuse tied to the dolls. She and Max laugh and bump into each other while scrambling away. They run and hide behind Chloe's bed, peering over the top at their experiment. The fuse burns out but nothing happens at first. Then it explodes, and charred doll parts fly across the room as Max and Chloe duck. Max gets up and takes off her goggles; and Chloe laughs happily and jumps onto her bed, taking off her glasses as well.
Chloe: Tell me that wasn't the coolest thing you've ever seen!
You're insane.
Max: You're insane. That explosion was massive.
Chloe: You say that like it's a bad thing.
Max: Pretty sure your mom would think so. Let's hope she didn't hear...
That was amazing.
Max: That was truly amazing. Why are explosions so awesome?
Chloe: That's like asking "why are puppies cute?" Some things...just are.
Max: Um, I'm not sure your mom would see it that way.
Chloe jumps off the bed.
Chloe: When she asked me to get rid of my old junk, she never specified how... (reluctantly) But I guess I'd better do some actual cleaning too. (normally) I'll be excavating the closet. If you see anything else to trash, help a girl out and chuck it on the pile over there.
Chloe gestures to a cardbox box on the floor marked "TRASH". Chloe walks over to the closet and begins to search through a different box.
Max: (thinking) It feels like I've spend half my life hanging out in this room. [chuckles] Probably because I have. I...can't believe those days are all over now. In a few days, my whole family moves to Seattle. I have no idea when I'll see Chloe again. This could be my last chance to say goodbye.
Max bends down and picks up a charred doll head off the floor.
Max: (thinking) But...how do you tell your best friend that you're leaving her?
Max looks over at Chloe. She drops the doll head back on the floor.
Max: (thinking) I better help Chloe with her cleaning. And while I'm at it, I can take one long, last look around this place...
Optional Conversation with Chloe
Before trashing anything:
Chloe: Come on, Max. Help me out here. Find something for me to trash.
After trashing one thing:
Chloe: Why is getting rid of stuff so much harder than collecting it?
Max: Maybe 'cause you're an overly sentimental hoarder?
Chloe: Granted. But I still need some more junk in the trash pile.
After trashing two things:
Max: Next up on hoarders of Arcadia Bay...
Chloe: Har har.
Max can open the drawer on Chloe's desk and attempt to trash the boy band cards inside. She picks up the box of cards and turns to Chloe.
Max: How about these boy band trading cards? Super cringeworthy.
Chloe takes the box from Max.
Chloe: Yeah, and hilarious! Remember when we gave them all makeovers?
Sharpie boob jobs.
Max: You mean when you drew boobs on all of them? [chuckles] I was so mad at you.
Chloe: And yet, our friendship lived on. So too will these cards.
Funny back then.
Max: That was pretty funny...when we were ten. Don't you think it's time to let the boys go?
Chloe: Not yet. Boy toys stay...for now.
Chloe hands the box to Max and she puts it back in the drawer.
Max can look at the concert tickets on the corkboard.
Max: (thinking) [sighs] This was our first unsupervised concert together. It was so much fun. We were supposed to see another show next month, but...
Chloe sees Max looking at the tickets and gets up.
Chloe: How sick was that show?
Max: [sighs] The sickest.
Chloe: I've been working on my moves for the next one. Check it out.
Chloe dances and hums a tune, and Max laughs.
Chloe: How 'bout you? Any new moves?
Totally.
Max: Yeah, totally. I've been working on my air guitar.
Max dances awkwardly and plays air guitar, singing a tune.
Chloe: (laughs) Damn, Caulfield. Save something for when it counts.
Max laughs and stops dancing.
Not really.
Max: No, not yet. I guess I'm still recovering from the last show.
Chloe: Fair enough.
Chloe: Alright, back to the junk mines.
Chloe returns to searching through the box.
Max can attempt to trash the board game. She picks up the box and starts carrying it to the trash box, but Chloe notices and steps in front of her..
Chloe: What are you doing?
Max: Adding this to the pile.
Chloe: No freaking way! Just 'cause I beat your ass every time we play doesn't make it trash.
You beat me?
Max: Uh, that's BS. The last time we played, I wiped the floor with you.
Chloe: Poor Max. Losing your memory at such a young age. Guess we'll have to play again soon and find out.
We never play.
Max: Chloe, we haven't played this game in years. And it's missing half the pieces.
Chloe: Nice try, Max. But you can't erase your shame that easily.
Chloe points and holds up the board game, and Max tosses it back onto the shelf. Chloe returns to searching through her box.
Max can attempt to trash the magic set in Chloe's drawer.
Max: This seems like a good candidate.
Max picks up the magic set and shows it to Chloe, who gets up and turns to Max.
Chloe: Are you insane? That's my entire magic collection. Do you know how many allowance this cost?
You never use it.
Max: You haven't touched these since the fifth grade talent show.
Chloe: Maybe because my assistant turned out to be squeamish at the sight of fake blood.
Max: At least you didn't saw me in half.
It's so lame.
Max: You said yourself, magic is super lame.
Chloe: I did. But that was before I learned how much children's birthday parties pay.
Max: If you can trick parents into paying you, (giggles) I will truly believe you're a magician.
Max: How are you planning to clean this place if you won't throw away anything?
Chloe: A magician never reveals her secrets. Put it back.
Max rolls her eyes and puts the magic set back in the drawer, and Chloe returns to her box.
Max can look at William's camera on the desk.
Max: Hey, what's your dad's camera doing in here?
Chloe: Dad said I could bring it up here for you to use. He's tired of watching you drool all over yourself every time he uses it. His words.
Max: Your dad is the best.
Chloe: Sure. Just don't ever tell HIM that. We need to keep him on his toes.
Max picks up the camera and accidentally takes a picture of herself, the flash hurting her eyes.
Max: Gah!
Chloe: (chuckles) You're off to a great start.
Max takes the photo out of the camera and shakes it to reveal a picture of herself with a grimace on her face.
Max: Actually...it's kinda cool.
Max puts away the photo and camera.
Max can look at the acceptance letter.
Max: (thinking) I bet Chloe's parents were freaking out when she got this letter.
Max: I still can't believe you're a Blackwell Academy student. How is it?
Chloe: Oh, the classes are incredible. The teachers are actually smart. And the lab is legit. Petri dishes for days.
Max: What about the students? Are they as stuck-up as you thought they'd be?
Chloe: They're...fine.
Chloe turns away from Max.
Push further.
Max: Chloe, you are terrible at hiding your feelings. Is everything okay?
Chloe turns back to Max.
Chloe: I don't know. I just... I like hanging out with...normal people. Like...you.
Max: Thanks. (chuckling) I guess.
Chloe: You know what I mean. I...I hate fake people. You're...real.
Max: Thanks.
Say nothing.
Max: (thinking) Chloe seems upset about something, but I don't wanna pry. Maybe I'll get it out of her later.
Max can attempt to trash Mr. Sharkie. She leans down, preparing to pick him up, but Chloe notices her.
Chloe: You better not be thinking what I think you are.
Max: Chloe, I haven't seen you touch this guy in years. Why do you care?
Chloe: Why do I care if you throw my beloved childhood friend into the trash?! I don't think that deserves an answer.
Max pats Mr. Sharkie.
Max: Sorry, chum.
Chloe: That's better.
Max can attempt to trash the jawbreaker in Chloe's dresser.
Max: (picking up jawbreaker) What about this half-eaten jawbreaker? Serious biohazard.
Chloe: You promised me we'd finish it together, no matter how long it took. Don't be a quitter.
Lick it.
Max: You're right.
Max licks the jawbreaker.
Chloe: Yes! The never-ending candy lives on.
Max hands it to Chloe, who licks it as well, then grimaces. Chloe tosses it into a box nearby.
Toss it.
Max: Your mom and your dentist will thank me.
Max tosses it into the trash box, and Chloe wrings her hands.
Chloe: Ugh! So lame! Just...(slamming floor with her hand) So lame.
Max can attempt to save Chloe's hoodie in the trash box. She pulls it out of the box.
Chloe: (getting up) What are you doing?
Max: Your favorite hoodie. You must've thrown it in by mistake, right?
Chloe: No. It's fine. It's filled with holes and...falling apart.
Max: That never stopped you from wearing it before.
Chloe: It's fine. Really.
Chloe returns to her box and Max puts the hoodie back.
Max: (thinking) Okay, whenever I'm ready, I can go tell Chloe I'm done arguing about trash with her.
Conversation with Chloe
(Didn't look at camera)
Chloe: Hey, did you see my dad's camera yet? (points to desk) Dad said I could bring it up here for you to use.
Max: That's it. I'm calling off the search. If you want more trash, you'll have to find it yourself.
Chloe gets up.
Chloe: (sighs) Well, it wasn't exactly the purge Mom was hoping for. But at least we tried, right?
Max: Right.
Chloe: And now we've got the whole day ahead of us. What do two under-supervised friends with clean rooms and clean slates wanna get into today?
Max: (thinking) I guess now would be a good time to tell Chloe I'm leaving. Or I could let us enjoy the day first and tell her later.
Tell her now.
Max: Actually, Chloe, I really have to tell you something.
Chloe smiles and turns around, digging through a box near her closet.
Max: It's—I, uh—don't know how to—
Chloe: Holy shit! Max, hold that thought.
Chloe gets up and tosses an audiotape to Max.
Chloe: This must've fallen out when I was digging around in here.
Tell her later.
Max: The possibilities are endless. Got anything in mind?
Chloe: Actually... You bet your ass I do.
Chloe retrieves something from the box behind her and tosses it to Max.
Chloe: I found this when I was digging around before you got here. You're gonna flip.
Chloe: Do you have any idea what this is?
Max looks at the tape in her hands. The date "6/27/2003" is written on it and there are two skull-and-crossbones drawings on either side.
Not really...
Max: You're the one with the killer memory, not me.
Chloe: Very true. One of my finest traits, along with my humility.
Max: Whatever it is, it looks like it came out of our pirate phase.
Chloe: Your powers of deduction are as strong as ever!
Chloe: This tape is from five years ago. (takes it out of Max's hands) It's a message from our past selves to our current selves.
Chloe inserts the tape in an tape player.
Max: So we were eight years old? That's crazy! I can't even imagine what we sounded like.
Chloe sets the tape player on the floor and she and Max sit down next to it.
Chloe: Ready to find out?
Chloe presses play. Young Chloe and Max laugh on the tape.
Young Chloe: (in pirate voice) Avast, future wayfarer! Ye have uncovered the audio log of the most fearsome pirates in the Bays of Arcadia!
Max laughs along with their younger selves on the tape.
Young Chloe and Max: (in unison) Captain Bluebeard and Long Max Silver! (laughs)
Max: (chuckles) Oh, my god! We were such dorks.
Chloe: Shh!
Young Max: (in pirate voice) So, yer in search of buried treasure, are ye? Well, if it's treasure ye seek—
Young William: (in pirate voice) Do mine eyes spot two fair pirate wenches? Hahaha! What have we—
Young Chloe: Dad! Get away! We're in the middle of an important project!
Young William: Oh, a project! Nevermind, then. I apolog—
Young Chloe: I mean it!
Young William: Alright, alright. Supper's in five. Wash your hands, (in pirate voice) ya grubby pirate kids...
Young Chloe: So lame.
Young Max: (in pirate voice) As I was saying, if it's treasure ye seek, ye've come to the right place.
Young Chloe: (in pirate voice) But be forewarned, the journey will be treacherous and full of...treachers.
Chloe: Nice.
Young Max: (in pirate voice) To find the treasure of Price Isle, you will need the map from the manuscripts of Captain Bluebeard.
Young Chloe: (in pirate voice) Only the map can lead ye to the treasure ye seek. But be forewarned, uh, again. Only those with pure hearts will be able to see what the amulet shows them.
Max: The amulet...
Young Max: (in pirate voice) Good luck. And, uh, bye!
Chloe stops the tape.
Chloe: Dude. That was...
Amazing.
Max: Amazing! I can't believe you still have that!
Chloe: I would never throw away something so precious.
Hilarious.
Max: Hilarious! We were so, so ridiculous.
Chloe: We still are, Max. We still are.
Dorky.
Max: So dorky. What were we thinking?
Chloe: I thought we were lovable.
Chloe and Max laugh.
Chloe: Okay, okay. Forget everything. Today, we go treasure hunting.
Chloe picks up the tape player and puts it away, then searches through the shelf. Max gets up as well.
Chloe: I think I know what 8-year-old you meant by the manuscripts of Captain Bluebeard.
Chloe stands up, holding something behind her back, then hands it to Max, revealing that it's a sketchbook.
Max: Our old sketchbook! This is where we kept all our pirate drawings.
Chloe: Yup. Now let's see this map.
They flip through the sketchbook, which is filled with various pirate-themed photos, drawings, and writing. The last page has been ripped out.
Max: (thinking) This looks like a page was ripped out. I wonder if it's the map?
Max: Hey, check this out. This page was ripped out. Do you think it's the map?
Chloe: If it is, there's no way I would've thrown it out. Maybe it's mixed in with the rest of the drawings?
Chloe starts searching through the shelves and Max tosses the sketchbook onto Chloe's bed.
(Tried to tell Chloe)
Max: (thinking) So much for telling Chloe now. All she cares about is finding this map. But where could it be?
(Didn't try to tell Chloe)
Max: (thinking) Alright, time to find this map.
Optional Conversation with Chloe
Max: Any luck?
Chloe: Nope. You?
Max: Nothing yet.
Max can take a photo in the mirror.
Max: Don't move. This angle is perfect.
Chloe: Why by shy? Get in here, dude.
Pose with Chloe.
Max leans in front of the mirror, taking a picture of Chloe and herself. She puts the camera away and looks at the photo.
Chloe: Subject and photographer. You really do it all, Max.
Max: (chuckles) I try.
Max puts the photo away.
Photograph Chloe alone.
Max takes a picture of Chloe in the mirror.
Chloe: Lame!
Max: Not!
Max looks at the photo, then puts it away.
Max examines Chloe's textbook. She pulls out a sheet of paper which depicts a map.
Max: Bingo!
Chloe gets up as Max puts the map on the bed, and they look at it together.
Max: I'm remembering this now. Didn't we make some crazy puzzle? You need the telescope and the amulet...
Chloe: ...which we hid inside a dark cavern, AKA the attic.
Max: Ugh, why did we do that to ourselves?
Chloe: Because we were eight years old and the attic was the scariest thing we could think of.
Still there?
Max: You think it's still there?
Chloe: Should be. As long as the clean police haven't gotten to it first.
Still scary?
Max: Was? Your attic is still terrifying.
Chloe: (chuckles) It's been five years, Max. I'm sure the boogie man has died of starvation.
Max: It's more the mice and spiders I'm afraid of.
Chloe: Time to face your fears, then.
Max: Okay, and once we have the amulet and the telescope, we use them to reveal the treasure...somehow.
Chloe: Here's what's happening: I'll head to the garage to dig up my old telescope. (opens door) You go find that amulet. We'll meet out back at the pirate ship. (walks away)
Max: You mean the swings?
Chloe walks back in front of the door.
Chloe: Yes, the pirate ship. Captain Bluebeard (makes hook with her finger) and Long Max Silver (covers her eye) ride again, bitches! (walks away)
(Tried to tell Chloe)
Max: (thinking) I'll find a way to tell Chloe later.
(Didn't try to tell Chloe)
Max: (thinking) Chloe seems so into this.
Max holds the sketchbook in her hands.
Max: (thinking) If this has to be my last day here, might as well have one final pirate adventure.
Max leaves the room and closes the door.
Upstairs[]
Max: (thinking) Okay, Chloe said she hid the amulet in the attic. The only way in is through the broom closet.
Max opens the closet door and turns on the light.
Max: (thinking) There it is, the "Dark Cavern".
Max tries to reach the attic door.
Max: (thinking) Crap. I can't get into the attic if I can't even reach the door. I need to find something to stand on. I'm sure I can find something around here to boost me up.
Max moves the crate in the corner of the closet or the stepstool in Joyce and William's room. She stands on her tiptoes on top of it and tries to open the door again. After failing to reach it, she steps down.
Max: (thinking) It's a start. I gotta find something I can stack on top of it.
Max takes the stepstool in Joyce and William's's room and places it on top of the crate. If Max placed the stepstool first, she moves it out of the way with her foot, then places the crate down and stacks the stepstool on top.
Max: (thinking) Almost there.
(Placed crate, then stepstool)
Max: (thinking) I just need a few more inches.
(Placed stepstool, then crate)
Max: (thinking) I just need one more thing.
Max takes the books on the shelf and stacks them on the other items.
Max: (thinking) I think that should be tall enough...
Max climbs up and enters the attic.
Attic[]
Max enters the dark attic.
Max: (whispering) Awesome!
Max turns on the light.
Max: (thinking) Man, there is a ton of stuff up here. How will I ever...
Max notices the amulet.
Max: (thinking) There it is! Of course Chloe hid the amulet in the hardest place to get to. I need to find a way through.
Max pushes the old chair in front of her.
Max: (thinking) I think I can squeeze through now.
Max squeezes through the gap. She looks at the furniture blocking her way.
Max: (thinking) It's a good thing I'm big and burly. Otherwise moving this furniture would be kinda difficult.
Max pulls the desk.
Max: (thinking) Crap.
Max pulls the dresser.
Max: (thinking) One step closer.
Max can move the dresser again and enter the space it was previously blocking. She can open the box labeled "costumes".
Max: (thinking) Long Max Silver's eye patch...
Take the eye patch.
Max: (thinking) This'll be perfect.
Max puts a bandana on her head, a sash around her waist, and an eye patch over her left eye.
Max: (thinking) Arrr...
Leave it be.
Max: (thinking) It was fun back then. But I'm good.
Max pushes the desk.
Max: (thinking) This desk's pretty heavy.
Max pulls the cooler.
Max: (thinking) Glad this thing is empty...
Max pulls the cooler again.
Max: (thinking) Yes!
Max squeezes through into the room with the amulet.
Max: Finally!
Max takes the amulet.
Max: Got you!
Max looks at the amulet in her hand.
Max: (thinking) This thing is...cool, I guess? I wish I could remember how it works.
Max hears Chloe outside.
Chloe: Stay right there. Haha! Got it! (in pirate voice) Nothing can stop the mighty Bluebeard. Arr, ya scallywag!
Max moves a board away from the window and sits on a stool next to it. She has a moment of calm while watching Chloe outside. Chloe is wearing a sash, vest, and pirate captain's hat, and holding a trowel and empty bottle, pretending to be dueling someone. She takes a break to pretend to drink from the empty bottle.
Chloe: Haha! I have you now, scallywag!
Chloe notices Max.
Chloe: Are you just watching me up there, creeper?
Max: You are one of a kind, Chloe Price.
Chloe: What?
Max: I'm lucky your my best friend, that's all.
Chloe: Damn right you are, you mushy weirdo! Did you find the amulet?
Act natural.
Max: I'm just getting some light. This cavern is even darker than I remembered.
Chloe: Did you conquer your fears?
Max: You could say that.
Max shows Chloe the amulet.
Chloe: Awesome! Now get your ass down here, we have treasure to find!
Max: (laughs) On my way.
Max walks away, preparing to leave the attic.
Backyard[]
Max enters the backyard, holding the amulet in one hand. Chloe is standing on a ladder propped up on the swings, looking through a telescope.
(Wore pirate outfit)
Chloe: The Dark Cavern was no match for you, eh? Long Max Silver to the rescue.
Max: (holding up amulet) Treasure's sure to be ours, Cap'n.
(Didn't wear pirate outfit)
Chloe: Dude, you did it!
Max: No big deal.
Chloe: Bring the amulet over here so I can see!
Max: (thinking) Chloe is so excited! I better bring her the amulet before she makes me walk the plank.
Max can pick up the ball on the ground.
Max: (thinking) I've spent so much of my life here, every little corner is familiar. Comforting.
Max starts bouncing the ball against the drawing board.
Max: (thinking) These games we're playing...buried pirate treasure from our past selves...
(Tried to tell Chloe)
Max: (thinking) Is this why I keep pushing off telling Chloe I'm leaving? Because I don't want to ruin this time together?
(Didn't try to tell Chloe)
Max: (thinking) Is this all selfish of me? Why is this making me feel more guilty about leaving?
Max: (thinking) How am I going to—
Max bounces the ball against the board and Chloe catches it mid-air.
Chloe: 'Sup, dude.
Max: Bro.
Chloe: Don't you mean "sis"?
Chloe and Max take turns bouncing the ball on the board and letting the other one catch it.
Chloe: Dork.
Punk.
Max: Punk.
Chloe: Punks are cool.
Doofus.
Max: Doofus.
Chloe: Only doofuses say "doofus".
Chloe: You know what, Max Caulfield?
Max: What, Chloe Price?
Chloe pulls Max into a hug and Max drops the ball.
Chloe: You're the frickin' best. That's all.
Where'd that come from?
Max: Talk about mushy. Where'd that come from?
Chloe: Just thinking about how awesome this day is. And how awesome we are.
You're damn right.
Max: Damn right. About time you realized it.
Chloe: Tell anyone and I'll deny it.
Chloe bumps Max's shoulder with hers.
Chloe: Okay, enough of this shit. There's treasure to be unburying!
Chloe walks away.
Chloe: Good talk!
Chloe bumps Max's shoulder with hers and walks away.
Max can take an optional photo of Chloe. She pulls out her camera.
Max: Hey, Chloe!
Chloe: Yarrr!
Walk the plank!
Max: Walk the plank!
Chloe turns around and puts one foot out as if she was stepping off the plank.
Land ho!
Max: Land ho!
Chloe looks through her telescope and points as if sighting land.
Max snaps a picture and looks at it, then puts her camera and photo away.
Max: Perfect!
Conversation with Chloe
Chloe: Wait just a minute. (in pirate voice) Yarr, ye must ask permission before setting foot...er, peg on another captain's boat!
Permission to come aboard?
Max: (in pirate voice) Permission to come aboard, Captain Bluebeard?
Chloe: (in pirate voice) Grrrrrranted.
And I'm the dork?
Max: And you say I'm the dork?
Chloe: Takes one to know one.
Max: One amulet, coming right up.
Max holds up the amulet and Chloe takes it.
Chloe: Okay, uh... I think it goes...
Chloe tries to attach it to the end of the telescope.
Chloe: Ugh. Damn it. I forget how to make this stay on.
(Looked at tape)
Max: Stay here, I think I saw some tape.
(Didn't look at tape)
Max: Stay here, I'll find something to hold it on.
Chloe: Thanks, Max.
(Tried to tell Chloe)
Max: (thinking) Just some tape left between us and the treasure.
(Didn't try to tell Chloe)
Max: (thinking) Time to stick that amulet to the telescope, then that treasure is ours.
Optional Conversation with Chloe
Max: If you told me this morning we'd be spending the day as pirates, I would've thought you were crazy.
Chloe: Yeah, I probably look like a loser, huh?
Losers together.
Max: Yeah, totally. But we're losers together.
(Wore pirate outfit)
Max points to her eye patch.
Max: See?
Chloe: If you're a loser, Max, I don't think I want to be cool.
Not even if you tried.
Max: Chloe, you could never be a loser. Even if you tried.
Chloe: Well, yeah, but best friend code requires you to say that.
Chloe: It's just... This whole day has made me feel like a little kid again.
Max: I can't believe we were eight and nine when we planned this.
Chloe: I can. This tiny kid's hat is squeezing the shit outta my head.
Max: (laughs) Well, treasures don't find themselves.
Chloe: Lead the way!
If Max speaks to Chloe again:
Chloe: I'll hold ship down while you find some tape.
Max takes the painter's tape.
Max: (thinking) Score! One step closer to getting that treasure. Whatever it is...
Max speaks to Chloe.
Chloe: (in pirate voice) Avast, matey. Have ye brought me prize?
Pirate's tape!
Max: Ahoy, Bluebeard! I have brought the stickiest tape in all the seven seas.
Chloe: Well done, fellow scallywag.
Painter's tape.
Max: Some painter's tape, coming right up!
Chloe hops down to stand in front of Max.
Chloe: Just like old times, huh, Max? Remember how we used to talk about ruling the Bays of Arcadia one day? We thought we were gonna be pirates forever.
We still are pirates.
Max: If being a pirate means acting silly and going on crazy adventures together, then we'll always be pirates.
Chloe: Hell yeah!
We grew up.
Max: I guess we grew out of it. But it's fun to act like kids again, for a little while.
Chloe: Yeah.
Max hands the tape to Chloe, and she uses it to attach the amulet to the end of the telescope. She looks through it to test it out, then offers it to Max.
(Acted like a pirate)
Chloe: Would you like to do the honors, Long Max Silver?
(Didn't act like a pirate)
Chloe: Would you like to do the honors?
Max takes the telescope.
Max: Me? Are you sure?
Chloe: Course. Come on, navigator, point me to some treasure!
Max climbs onto the ladder near the swings and looks through the telescope.
Max: Wait, how am I supposed to use this?
Chloe: The drawing on the lens. It should line up with...something.
Max: Here goes nothing.
Max: (thinking) Okay, this drawing is supposed to line up with something...
Max moves and rotates the lens until the cannons on the amulet line up with the windows of the neighboring house and the mast of the ship lines up with the phone pole. The X marks the spot of ground near the table in the backyard.
Max: Got it!
Chloe: (laughs) Yes! You rock! Where is it?
Chloe runs out into the backyard, standing close to the where the treasure is marked.
Chloe: Here?
Left.
Max: Okay, take a step left.
Chloe takes a step to her right, Max's left.
Max: No, wrong way!
Chloe: You said left!
Your right.
Max: No, your right.
Chloe: I'm right?
Max: What? No.
Chloe: I'm wrong?
Your other left.
Max: Your other left. Go the other way.
Chloe: The other way to my other left?
Max: Ugh. Just go...
Max points to Chloe's left, Max's right.
Max: That way!
Chloe walks where Max pointed.
Max: Perfect. Now come towards me!
Chloe takes a few steps forward.
Max: Bingo!
Chloe runs off to get a shovel and Max jumps down. They run back to the spot and Chloe starts digging. She stops when she hears the shovel hit something. She tosses the shovel to the ground and she and Max kneel, digging with their hands.
Max: What the...
Chloe: That is not what we buried.
Part of a canister can be seen in the ground.
Downstairs[]
Max and Chloe place the canister on a dining chair. They are now in their regular clothes.
Max: What is this?
Chloe: I don't know. Let's open it.
Chloe takes off the lid of the canister. Inside is a box, a picture of Chloe and her dad dressed as pirates, and an audiotape labeled "From Bloody Bill" with a skull-and-crossbones drawn on. Max takes out the tape and the photo.
Max: "From Bloody Bill". Who's that?
Chloe takes the tape from Max.
Chloe: I'll get the tape player!
Chloe runs upstairs. Max looks at the photo in her hands.
Max: (thinking) Aha. Chloe's dad is such a goofball.
Chloe enters, holding the tape player. She climbs onto the table and sits down, placing the tape player next to her and turning it on.
Young William: (in pirate voice) Ahoy there, plankwalkers! (chuckles) It's me, Bloody Bill the Pirate King!
Chloe: (laughs) What the heck?
Max laughs.
Young William: (in pirate voice) By now ye'll have seen that I've dug up yer treasure, (in normal voice) which would normally make us mortal enemies. But, hear me out, (in pirate voice) I haven't pilfered a thing! On the contrary! I figured you swashbucklers might not be back to yer loot for some time, so I've given it extra protection from the winds and rain. I'm sure you're excited to open your time capsule, so I...(in normal voice) won't go on too long. Just know that Bloody Bill is bloody proud of you—both of you. (in pirate voice) Keep those sails trimmed and that anchor scrubbed. And always remember: the real treasure is—
Chloe: Friendship.
Max: Love.
Young William: —your Oregon state prepaid college savings plan! Argh.
Max and Chloe laugh and Chloe turns off the tape player.
Chloe: Ugh!
Chloe hops off the table, pulls the box out of the canister, and sets it on the table.
Max: That's what we originally buried.
Chloe: Huh. Yeah, I guess it probably would've gotten ruined underground.
Max opens the box and Chloe reaches into it, retrieving a red squid plushy.
Chloe: (laughs) Holy crap! It's Billy The Squid! He's alive! Oh, man...
Max: It really is like a time capsule.
Max and Chloe search through the rest of the contents of the box.
Chloe: No way!
Max: Chloe, look at this. We wrote each other letters.
Chloe: (laughs) I remember these...
Max and Chloe each open a letter from their younger selves to each other.
Chloe: "To Chloe Price". Thanks, Max!
Max laughs.
Chloe: "I hope you are having a lot of fun being a teenager with your best friend." Aww, you were so cute. Check it out.
Chloe shows Max the letter.
Max: (thinking) Bleh. "Maxine"?
Chloe: How about mine? What did I write?
Chloe sets down her letter on the table. Chloe and Max read the letter from young Chloe.
Max: (thinking) This is so Chloe.
You were really funny.
Max: You were really funny. Mine was so serious.
Chloe: Well, yeah, that's you. Serious and genuine.
You were really sweet.
Max: You were really sweet.
Chloe hip bumps Max.
Chloe: Oh, man... I was really goopy.
Max: I like it.
Chloe: That's because you're a goop.
Chloe: This is so cool! There's so much to look at...
Max sets down her letter.
Max: Is your mom going to mind about this mess?
Chloe: Dunno. I thought they'd be home by now. Max! Remember scratch art?
Chloe picks up a scratch notebook.
Chloe: I love this stuff!
Chloe picks up a photo.
Chloe: I'm gonna draw something.
Chloe goes to the couch and starts drawing in the notebook.
Max: (thinking) All these memories... I want to look at everything.
Max looks at all the time capsule items.
Max and Chloe's Comments
Max: A time capsule was such a good idea.
Chloe: I know, right? We're geniuses!
Chloe: Argh. I keep messing up my picture.
Max: There are no mistakes in art.
Optional Conversation with Chloe (before checking the time capsule)
First conversation
Chloe: No peeking at my work!
Max: I wasn't!
Chloe: Get out of here!
Second conversation
Max: Today's been awesome, huh?
Chloe: For real. I love it when you stay over.
Max: Yeah.
Third conversation
Max: So, can I see your drawing or what?
Chloe: Nope. Not done yet.
Max can sit on the couch.
Max: You're such a space hog! Move over.
Chloe: Nope.
Chloe lies down on the couch, placing her legs over Max. Max can have a moment of calm on the couch.
After looking at Chloe, Max can take a photo of her.
Pose with Chloe.
Max: Take a break for a second?
Chloe: This artist waits for no one!
Max: Oh, stop.
Max leans down and takes a selfie with Chloe, then shows her the picture.
Chloe: That was worth stopping for.
Photograph Chloe alone.
Chloe: I can see what you're doing.
Max: Just don't move!
Max takes a photo of Chloe.
Max: The artist at work!
Chloe: Or trying to work!
After opening the photo album, Max can try to recreate the photo. She picks up the baseball cap on the coffee table and tosses it at Chloe.
Chloe: Yes?
Max: Pose for a photo with that?
Chloe sets down her notebook and pen and picks up the hat.
Max: Okay, tip your head back and put your arms out. And a really big smile.
Chloe does as Max asks, the baseball cap covering her eyes.
Chloe: (laughs) Like this?
Max: (laughs) It's perfect, stop moving!
Max takes a photo.
Max: Really cute, Chloe.
Chloe takes off the hat.
Chloe: You're not so bad yourself.
Max can look at the answering machine if she saw the emails in Joyce and William's room.
Max: (thinking) I wonder if that's the voicemail Chloe's mom was talking about. She did say she didn't want Chloe to hear it. But if Chloe's in trouble at Blackwell, this might be my only chance to get her to talk about it.
Max can listen to the answering machine. Chloe looks shocked when it starts playing, dropping her sketchpad and rushing over to Max.
Ann Rogers: This is Ann Rogers, Marisa's mother—Marisa from Blackwell. I need to talk to you about what your daughter did to Marisa in class today. I'll be keeping Marisa home with me tomorrow. At this point, I'm not comfortable sending her back to school at all. I don't know if your daughter's having trouble adjusting or what, but this needs to be addressed.
The message ends. Chloe moves to erase it, but Max moves her hand away.
Max: Hey, hold on.
Chloe: Are you serious? I don't want my parents to hear that! I've never gotten in trouble like this before.
Max: They already know. I, um... I saw an email on your parents' computer.
Chloe: Shit.
Max: What happened?
Chloe: Something so minor. Her mom is exaggerating. I bet Marisa told her that I... I'm telling you, it's stupid.
They both sound awful.
Max: They both sound awful. Marisa and her mom.
Chloe: They are. All Marisa talks about is, like, how much she hates her tutor. But she never does any homework.
(Pushed further)
Chloe: I told you, I hate fake people.
(Said nothing/didn't talk about it)
Chloe: She's just so...full of herself, you know?
Max: Is everybody there like that?
Chloe: No, not everyone. But more than I'm used to.
You've gotta tell me.
Max: Come on, you've gotta tell me what happened. I'm your best friend.
(Pushed further)
Chloe: And you read my feelings too well. I almost told you upstairs.
Chloe: Man, none of this would've happened if I had you around. I wouldn't care what anyone said. Sorry, I don't mean it's your fault.
Chloe: Anyway, she...wouldn't leave me alone. So I turned up her Bunsen burner in Science. Just a little.
Max: What?
Chloe: No one got hurt! Not even close! You know that I know what I'm doing.
Max: Chloe... What do you mean she wouldn't leave you alone?
Chloe: She was making fun of my clothes and...calling me a scholarship kid.
(Tried to save hoodie)
Max: Is that why you wanted to throw away your hoodie?
Chloe: Don't worry, I'll keep it.
I'm really sorry.
Max: That really sucks. I'm sorry...
Chloe: Yeah.
You can handle this.
Max: Hey. You can handle this. You're so much cooler than she is.
Chloe: Just to you...
Chloe: Thanks, Max.
Conversation with Chloe
Chloe: Hey, hippie.
Max: How's the masterpiece?
Chloe: Working on the last bit. How about you? Done with the time capsule?
Yeah.
Max: Yeah, I think so.
Chloe: Well, perfect, because now I'm finished. Check it out!
Chloe shows Max her drawing.
(Put flower on Bongo's grave)
The drawing is of Max hugging Bongo.
Max: (thinking) Oh, gosh. I really miss Bongo.
Chloe: I saw you giving him a flower. It was so sweet.
(Lickedjawbreaker)
The drawing shows Max and a giant jawbreaker. Max is saying "Geez! This jawbreaker is going to last forever!"
Max: (thinking) This is so silly.
Max: "This jawbreaker is going to last forever"?
Chloe: Just like our friendship.
(Took photos)
The drawing shows Max with her camera.
Max: (thinking) Chloe always makes me look so much cooler than I really am.
Chloe: The artist at work.
(None of the above)
The drawing shows Bluebeard giving Max a tattoo with his hook for an arm.
Max: (thinking) What the heck?
Max: What tattoo am I getting?
Chloe: A heart with my initials. Duh.
Not yet.
Max: Not yet. I was just saying hi.
Chloe: Cool. This scratch pad is seriously great.
If Max speaks to Chloe again:
Chloe: You done with the time capsule?
If Max responds with "Not yet" again:
Max: No, still not yet.
Chloe: Well, bug me when you're done.
Max: Oh, Chloe... You were really drawing me that whole time?
Chloe gets up.
Chloe: Whoa, whoa, whoa—mushiness alert!
Chloe grabs Max's shoulders.
Chloe: Keep it together, Max.
Max: (thinking) I guess now's my chance to tell Chloe I'm leaving. We might not be alone again once her parents get back.
Chloe: Hey, ready for something else? I've got a great plan for the rest of the afternoon.
Max: (thinking) Crap. I don't want to ruin the rest of the day.
Chloe: You're staying for dinner, right?
Max: (thinking) Would Chloe even want me to tell her?
(Talked about Marisa)
Max: (thinking) She's already got enough drama from Blackwell.
(Tried to tell the truth)
Max: (thinking) She didn't seem to want to talk about anything serious upstairs.
(None of the above)
Max: (thinking) She didn't like me getting mushy just now.
Chloe waves her hand in front of Max's face.
Chloe: Max?
Max: (thinking) It's just Seattle. I'm probably overstressing about the whole thing. Right?
Tell her.
Max sits on the couch.
Max: Chloe?
Chloe: Max?
Max: I want to tell you...something.
Chloe sits on the couch next to her.
Chloe: Okay.
Max: I'm, um... My family's moving to Seattle really soon. Hey.
Chloe: In three days, right?
Max: What? You knew that?
Chloe: Our parents do talk, you know?
Max: But, they said I should be the one to tell you—
Chloe: They still told my parents. I guess Mom and Dad were trying to keep quiet, too, but they're bad at hiding anything. Don't look so worried Max, it's okay. (lightly shoves Max's shoulder) Come on, dorkmeister. It's not the end of the world.
Why did you pretend?
Max: Why did you pretend like you didn't know?
Chloe: I don't know. I...I guess...I guess I didn't want it to be true.
(Acted like a pirate)
Chloe: We were both doing it, weren't we? All that pirate stuff, doing the treasure hunt. Wasn't that fun?
Max: Of course, but...
(Didn't act like a pirate)
Chloe: Like, why ruin the little time we have left?
Max: I was thinking that too.
I should have told you earlier.
Max: I should've just told you earlier. God, I feel so stupid.
Chloe: Max, I said it was okay.
(Tried to tell Chloe)
Max: I was trying to tell you this morning, but—
Chloe: But I totally distracted you with the pirate tape! Success!
Max: Seriously?
Chloe: I didn't want this hanging over us all day.
(Didn't try to tell Chloe)
Max: I thought about telling you this morning, but I just felt guilty instead.
Chloe: Well, I'm glad you didn't. Then it would have been hanging over us all day. That's why I didn't bring it up either.
Chloe: Plus I know you hate this kind of conversation, so...I just left it alone, you know?
Chloe takes Max's hand and pulls her off the couch and holds her hand.
Chloe: Come on, I want to spend every minute we have together having fun.
We'll keep in touch and visit.
Max: We'll keep in touch, okay? And visit. And maybe we'll move back. Who knows?
Chloe: Chill out. We can go to college together. It's going to be fine.
I'm worried I won't be okay.
Max: I'm so worried that I won't be okay without you.
Chloe: Hey, stop that. Of course you'll be okay.
Chloe: We're Max and Chloe, remember? We're always together, even when we're not.
Max: That's true.
Chloe: Cool. Let's find something fun to do.
Don't tell her.
Max: Okay, what's the plan?
Chloe: I'm taking you to the beach! We haven't been since school started.
Max: Yeah, that's true.
Chloe: It's gonna feel different now though.
Max: Why?
Chloe grabs the pen and jumps onto the couch, brandishing it as if it were a sword.
Chloe: Because we're pirates again. We can't go to a beach without taking it over. Or at least making a hideout.
Chloe tosses the pen and Max and she laughs.
Chloe: So! You wanna do that?
Chloe hops off the couch.
Max: Make a hideout?
Chloe: Yeah! One that's really tucked away, so people don't mess with it. Or even see it.
Max: I know exactly where we could put it. You know those two rocks? Right by the grassy part?
Chloe: Oh, yeah, that's perfect. Oh man! We could probably make it big enough to keep things there.
Max: Like a food stash. And towels and stuff?
Chloe: Yeah, and a flashlight. And maybe blankets. So we can go there at night.
That sounds dangerous.
Max: I guess we could. Do you think it's allowed?
Chloe: Who cares if it is or isn't? Pirates break rules.
(Looked at rum)
Chloe: We should sneak out there with a real bottle of rum.
(Didn't look at bottle)
Chloe: We should loot my dad's rum and sneak it out of there.
Chloe: What do you say?
Max: Yeah. Let's...let's do that.
That sounds beautiful.
Max: I bet that would be beautiful. One day I want to see glowing sand.
Chloe: Me too! My dad saw it once with my mom. He said their feet made blue florescent footprints!
Max: Oh, my god. I want to take a picture of that so bad.
Chloe: Oh, you have to. We can go every night to make sure we don't miss it.
Chloe: I'm so excited! We're gonna have the coolest pirate hangout ever, just like we always talked about.
Hide from everything.
Max: Yeah, and...hide from everything.
Chloe: Yup. We'll make it super cozy. Nothing will get in and bother us.
Just for us.
Max: Yeah, and it would just be for us.
Chloe: Exactly. Our own little place.
Chloe: This is so awesome. Let's get some snacks and go scope it out.
The door opens and Joyce enters, a police officer behind her, as Chloe goes into the kitchen. Seeing the look on Joyce's face, Max becomes concerned. Chloe notices Max's shock and walks back to her. She sees Joyce crying.
Chloe: Mom?
Chloe rushes to Joyce, who puts her hands on Chloe's shoulders. Joyce breaks the news of William's death, and Chloe sinks to the floor, crying. Max looks at the photo of William and Chloe on the table and starts crying as well. Joyce hugs Chloe and Max buries her face in her hands.
Max, Chloe, Joyce, and Max's parents are attending William's funeral at Arcadia Bay Cemetery. Ryan, Max's father, puts his hand on her shoulder, signaling that it's time to leave. Max's parents walk away and she follows them. Joyce, crying, tries to hug Chloe, but she moves away and Joyce buries her face in her hands. Max looks back, crying.
Max looks out the back of her parents car as they drive away, Joyce and Chloe still mourning over William's coffin.
Joyce and Chloe enter their house. Joyce leans on the door and Chloe walks upstairs and enters her room. She finds the tape player on the floor with a note attached to it saying "I'm sorry". She sits on the floor and turns it on.
Max: Hey... Chloe...this is Max.
(Told Chloe)
Max: I guess I just wanted to leave you one more message. Because I know this was the absolute worst time for me to go. I thought maybe if you heard my voice it could be a little bit like I was there. I don't know, maybe this was a dumb idea. I would give anything to be there with you now. It's so hard, trying to say what I'm thinking. If I could just see you... But we'll get good at it—great at it! We'll write and talk all the time. And then you'll come visit and it'll be like I never left. I mean it, you don't have to worry about anything changing. You're dealing with so much other stuff. You don't deserve any of this.
(Didn't tell Chloe)
Max: I have to tell you something. I know that I should have before, and I...I didn't mean to not tell you. I just...never found a time until...Chloe, I'm moving to Seattle. We're leaving today. My dad got a job there and...I don't know when I'll be back. I didn't want to go! It wasn't up to me and it was all so sudden and I still kind of can't believe it's really happening... I'm sorry that I didn't tell you. I'm so, so sorry. I hated thinking about us being apart, and I—I didn't want you to have to think about it, too. I didn't want to see you sad.
Max: Chloe, listen. Even if I never—even if we're moving for good... We're always together, okay? Even when we're apart. We're still Max and Chloe. I will always, always love you. Goodbye.
Chloe starts sobbing and clutches the tape player to her chest, curling up on the floor.
